The very fact that Iranian women are at the forefront of the current fight for women's rights in the Muslim world makes one wonder what they might have accomplished without the suffocating rules and limitations put on them by the present government, and the same goes for the population as a whole.
The movie isn't as weighty and depressing as it sounds; there is quite a bit of lightheartedness and humor, and the mother-in-law is something of a comic figure.
I really liked this movie because it takes you into the streets of Tehran, while most Iranian movies tend to be set mostly at home (such as Leila) or out in the country (such as in Majid Majidi's wonderful fables mostly featuring children).

His movies are sometimes labeled children's films, but that glib tag sets unfortunate limits on the scope and depth of his vision.

Five Iranian movies are scheduled to be screened at the competition section of the First International Muslim Film Festival in the city of Kazan, Russia's Constituent Republic in Volga.
Iran's cultural attache to Russia, Sa'id Adinehlu, told IRNA that the 35-mm copy of the selected movies should either be sent to the festival's secretariat or the cultural department of Iranian Embassy in Moscow not later than September 5, 2005.

Another few movies, each year, are made about the Iran-Iraq war and the 'Eight Year Holy Defence.' Unfortunately, not only these fail to show the reality of war, but also their total sacrifice propaganda has left most of Iranians alienated.
There is also another way of regarding the problem: making movie on social issue about Iranian society is very tricky and whenever somebody wants to address some issue and then add some fiction to it, in the end people consider his movie as a sheer documentary and blame him why he didn’t show the reality.
BTW I just wanted to mention another category of the movies like “Glassy Agency” or “Leyli with me ast” which deal with issues that are not at all familiar to non-Iranian audiences yet Iranians confront frequently in their everyday lives.

These films are often about children, but they nevertheless make challenging statements about modern transformations in Iranian society, and life in Tehran in particular.
The films I am interested in may then qualify as 'realism,' in the tradition of the earlier Indian and African realisms of the 1950's and 60's, which attempted to imagine newly emergent national spaces.

 Four Iranian films to be screened at Japanese film festival - Irna
Four Iranian movies will be screened at the 16th Fukuoka Asian Film Festival 2005.
An official in charge of the festival told IRNA here Thursday that the four Iranian films are Rakhshan Bani-Etemad's `Gilaneh', Majid Majidi's `The Weeping Willow', Reza Mirkarimi's `Too Far, Too Near' and Reza Azimian's `For the Sake of Life'.
He added that the Iranian movies will go on screen in the Special Middle East Section.
