The Iraq Stock Exchange was incorporated and began operations in June of 2004.
It operates under the oversight of the Iraq Securities Commission, an independent commission modeled after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Iraq's interim government under the Coalition Provisional Authority revised banking laws to allow foreign banks to launch subsidiaries, establish branches, and form joint ventures with Iraqi banks but individual foreign investment is still banned.
