Enhanced Programmable ircII Client - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Enhanced Programmable ircII Client (ircII-EPIC) is an IRC client for Unix systems descended from the ircII client.
EPIC was forked from ircII around September 1994 by Jeremy Nelson, and is now maintained by EPIC Software Labs.
In this way, EPIC may be considered as the client-side manifestation of the feelings which led to the creation of the original Undernet.

IrcII - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ircII is a Unix IRC client that is made available completely free of charge, and is available in source form.
Perhaps the most common are EPIC, BitchX and ScrollZ, all of them variants of the ircII client with greater functionality built into them at some stage in their development.
At one time, the ircII client set the standard against which all other clients were developed and measured.

The ircII port is not installed by default, nor is it "part of FreeBSD" as such: it is part of the FreeBSD ports collection, which contains over 3200 third-party applications in a ready-to-install format.
If you have not chosen to install the ircII port/package, then your system is not known to be vulnerable to this problem, although there are several other IRC clients, which are derived from ircII including Epic and BitchX.

ircII 2.8.2 - The 'classic' release version of ircII, stable with relatively tame bugs, recommended for most people who don't feel the need to be on the bleeding edge.
ircII Current - After 2.8, ircII went through many, many versions from 2.9roof through 4.4Z, all of which were extremely buggy, either simply annoying or seriously compromised.
After ircII 4.4 reached the Z release, the ircII team switched to naming their releases according to date.

 AusCERT - ESB-2000.065 -- FreeBSD-SA-00:11 -- ircII port contains a remote overflow
Problem Description ircII version 4.4 contained a remotely-exploitable buffer overflow in the /DCC CHAT command which allows remote users to execute arbitrary code as the client user.
The bug was originally reported in 1997 in a much older version of ircII, but was apparently not corrected at the time, and the problem was recently rediscovered independently.
Development on the version of ircII previously in ports ceased several years ago, and has been taken up by a new group who have fixed this problem (and possibly others).

IrcII versions 4.4-7 and possibly previous versions of the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) software are vulnerable to a buffer overflow in the implementation of the direct client-to-client (DCC) chat functionality.
An attacker could overflow the buffer and execute arbitrary code on a client that is attempting to initiate a DCC chat.
CVE-2000-0183: Buffer overflow in ircII 4.4 IRC client allows remote attackers to execute commands via the DCC chat capability.

We recommend it only as a heavy duty client, strictly for experienced ircII users who are prepared to figure out a lot of things by yourself and risk such mistakes.
Note that BitchX's channel protection settings are turned on by default, with inappropriate triggering thresholds which will probably result in your client turning on fellow channel operators in channels you hold ops in.

Anything that does not begin with "/irchelp/" is assumed to be a message to someone and will be sent to your current channel, or to a person you are QUERYing, (the QUERY command will be detailed later on, maybe in section 2.2).
Because ircII is not a simple client program, but an Operating System, its programming language is just as simple as you could expect (it's horrendous), but if you want to get into it, here's a little note for you.
However, you should know that setting up an automaton using ircII ON facilities is quick and dirty, and should be reserved for robots that rely on ircII specific features such as DCC (file servers for instance).

 IrcII - Tuxfutter
