 Irene Manning -- star of screen, stage
Manning, best known as the leading lady alongside Bogart in the 1942 action film "The Big Shot" and as the Broadway diva who sang with James Cagney in the 1942 musical "Yankee Doodle Dandy," died Friday at her home in San Bruno of respiratory complications.
Manning began her Hollywood career in 1936 with a kiss from Gene Autry in "The Old Corral." It would be the last time that Autry would kiss a leading lady on screen, as legend has it his fans demanded he only kiss his horse Champion in future films.
Manning abandoned her potential for the grand opera scene and instead pursued the silver screen and the Broadway stage.

IRENE Manning was an elegant lyric soprano who appeared in the 1940s film musicals Yankee Doodle Dandy and The Desert Song, recorded with the Glenn Miller band during the Second World War, and starred in her own BBC television show, An American in England, in 1951.
She also appeared opposite Dennis Morgan in the 1943 musical The Desert Song, co-starred with Humphrey Bogart in the 1942 crime drama The Big Shot and was in Shine On, Harvest Moon, a 1944 musical starring Morgan and Ann Sheridan.
Manning, who appeared as herself in the 1944 film Hollywood Canteen, toured the United States and Britain with her own four-woman unit to entertain troops during the Second World War.
