Irene R. Mathyssen (born August 16, 1951 in London, Ontario) is a Canadian politician and a Member of Parliament in the Canadian House of Commons.
Mathyssen was educated at the University of Western Ontario from 1970 to 1975, received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Drama, and a Bachelor of Education degree.
Notwithstanding her previous defeats, Mathyssen was considered to have a strong chance of defeating Pat O'Brien in the 2004 federal election.

Mathyssen, the NDP MP for London-Fanshawe, said she grew up in an impoverished family situation where employment was unstable.
Mathyssen said the 21 per cent of Parliament members who are women is simply not enough, and that affirmative action policies must be established to encourage women to run in ridings where they stand a chance of winning.
Mathyssen said her London-Fanshawe constituents are primarily concerned with health care, education and housing, which all affect women and families.

I'd say that when Irene Mathyssen wound up third in '95, it was less a personal rejection than a rejection of her government--and besides, she wasn't *supposed* to win in the first place.
Irene Matheyson did not have a good reputation for representing her constitutents views at Queen's Park, she was very difficult to get a hold of and her office was never open.

London, May 13th 2006 – London-Fanshawe MP Irene Mathyssen says the tabling of Bill C-225 in parliament only means that the City of London must continue to move ahead with a real by-law restricting the use of cosmetic pesticides locally.
Mathyssen was joined by Councillor Bill Armstrong, Leanne Behrns representing the Canadian Cancer Society, Jim Mahon representing the London District Labour Council, and Sam Trosow speaking for the London Coalition Against Pesticides.
Mathyssen is hosting an online petition on her website for Londoners to sign in support of both federal and municipal legislation on this issue.

Mathyssen won a seat in the provincial legislature in Rae's 1990 sweep to power, only to lose it five years later.
As volunteers dismantled her campaign office, Mathyssen said she wants to focus on making sure health care in Canada remains public, especially in light of the announcement this month that a new private clinic is coming to London in the summer.
Mathyssen's off to Ottawa next week to meet with leader Jack Layton and the rest of the NDP caucus.

The first 15 minutes were spent interviewing the NDP candidate Irene Mathyssen and the Liberal candidate Glen Pearson.
Irene and Glen kept saying how poor London-Fanshawe is, yet the CPAC crew followed Glen throughout Summerside, one of the more expensive and newest suburbs in our riding!
Dan's canvassing scene was at least honest, as he was in a Tim Horton's drive through line meeting real strangers, and, since he did not know them prior to the filming, he did not how they would react.
