Ryan already had enjoyed a long career as a character actor: she and her first husband, Tim Ryan, had a vaudeville act which became the radio show Ted and Irene, and she also toured with comedian Bob Hope and made regular appearances on his radio show.
In 1972 she created the role of Berthe in the Bob Fosse-directed Broadway musical Pippin, in which she sang the show-stopping number "No Time At All." Ryan was nominated for a 1973 Tony Award for her work in Pippin.

After the cancellation of "The Beverly Hillbillies", she was offered a starring role in a proposed TV series in which she would have played a character similar to that of her Hillbillies character Granny.
Though she may never have known it, Irene was a 3rd cousin once removed to another actress, Mary Castle, (born Mary Ann Noblett).

Ryan was a native of Swissvale who lived in Shadyside, but her heart often was in South Bend, Ind., with the Fighting Irish football team.
In the early 1990s, she and her husband, John T. Ryan Jr., made a large contribution to the Pittsburgh Oratory, which provides campus ministry to students at various colleges in Oakland.
