Ireton served under Fairfax in the second civil war in the campaigns in Kent and Essex, and was responsible for the executions of Sir Charles Lucas and Sir George Lisle at Colchester.
After the Restoration, in 1660, Charles II caused Ireton's corpse to be exhumed and mutilated in a macabre posthumous execution, along with that of Cromwell, in retribution for signing his father's death warrant.

Ireton was a zealous Puritan and became prominent in his county by organising the Root and Branch petition against episcopacy.
Ireton was elected MP for Appleby, Westmorland, in the recruiter by-elections of October 1645 and emerged as the ablest politician amongst the Army leadership.
Ireton drafted the Remonstrance of the Army, which demanded that the King should be brought to account for causing unnecessary bloodshed among his subjects, and he persuaded Fairfax and the Council of Officers of the necessity of moving against Parliament because of its continuing attempts to negotiate with Charles.

On the 3oth of October 1645 Ireton entered parliament as member for Appleby, and while occupied with the siege of Oxford he was, on the 15th of June 1646, married to Bridget, daughter of Oliver Cromwell.

 Henry Ireton and the English Revolution
Ireton was born in the village of Attenborough, a few miles south of Nottingham, into a minor gentry family.
We are told that, whilst at Ocford, Ireton "had the character in that house of a stubborn and sawcy fellow towards the seniors, and therefore his company was not much wanting." In 1642, he early on took a hard-line stance in favour of Parliament, and became a captain of the county horse.
Ireton and Cromwell were prominent in defending much of the existing social order; they resisted a dramatic widening of the franchise, fearing anarchic attacks on property would follow.

Eventually Ireton's scouts caught a troop of Royalist horse at supper in Naseby on 13 June, and battle was joined the next day.
Ireton, on the left wing, lost much of his horse to Prince Rupert of the Rhine's assault, and then made the error of attacking the Royalist infantry without support.
Ireton played an important part in upholding his men's interests, but declined to espouse their more extreme policies, nor was he fooled by the king's efforts to set the victors at odds with each other.
