Iridocyclitis, a type of anterior uveitis, is a condition in which the uvea of the eye suffers inflammation.
Iridocyclitis is usually caused by direct exposure of the eyes to chemicals, particularly lacrimators.
Chronic iridocyclitis is usually associated with systemic disorders including ankylosing spondylitis, Behçet's syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Reiter's syndrome, sarcoidosis, syphilis, tuberculosis, and Lyme disease.

The majority of patients develop iridocyclitis within 4 to 7 years after JRA onset; the average age at the time of diagnosis of JRA-associated iridocyclitis is 6 to 8 years.
The highest risk of iridocyclitis is within 2 years after the onset of arthritis and declines considerably after 8 years have elapsed from the onset of JRA.
Once iridocyclitis is diagnosed, the managing ophthalmologist can determine the frequency of visits, depending on the severity of uveitis, its response to therapy, and the treatment used.

Iridocyclitis is an inflammation of the iris (the colored part of the eye) and of the ciliary body (muscles and tissue involved in focusing the eye).
Exposure to chemicals that irritate the eyes (such as lachrymators) can cause iridocyclitis or aggravate an existing case.
If you are not certain whether a chemical was splashed in your eye or you are suffering from iridocyclitis you should consult a physician immediately.

The painful joint swelling children with JRA experience is one example of inflammation; another is iridocyclitis, an inflammation in the front of the eye, near the iris.
An eye inflammation called iridocyclitis or closely-related forms called anterior uveitis and iritis, are sometimes associated with JRA, especially the Pauciarticular type.
If iridocyclitis is found early and treated properly, it is unlikely to cause any trouble.

METHODS: Sera from 146 HLA typed patients with JRA representing all subtypes were analyzed for reactivity with the 45 kDa DEK protein by immunoblotting.
CONCLUSION: Antibodies to the 45 kDa DEK protein are characteristic of the pauciarticular onset subtype of JRA, particularly in patients with a history of iridocyclitis.

Eye Injury Caused by Tear-Gas Weapons
These corneal changes were accompanied by a marked suppurative iridocyclitis, the anterior chamber usually being filled with pus and hemorrhagic debris.
Organization of this inflammatory material was associated with shallowing of the anterior chamber, formation of retrocorneal membrane, and obliteration of the chamber angle by peripheral anterior synechias.
Microscopic examination confirmed these clinical observations and also revealed an associated iridocyclitis of the suppurative and nongranulomatous variety together with postnecrotic scarring of the iris and ciliary body.

Chronic iridocyclitis affects the iris and ciliary body (glandlike structure) behind the iris.
Therefore, it is important for pediatricians to refer all children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis to an Ophthalmologist for evaluation.
Since chronic iridocyclitis may start years after the juvenile rheumatoid arthritis began, children with this form of arthritis should have periodic checkups into their teenage years.
