  IRIG 106
IRIG 106 is a comprehensive telemetry standard to ensure interoperability in aeronautical telemetry application at RCC member ranges.
IRIG 106 is developed and maintained by the Telemetry Group of the Range Commanders Council.
The purpose of this method is to allow individual seperate data channels to transmit their data to a receiver, and have the receiver reconstruct the multiple data sources and multiple packets into a valid IRIG 106 Ch 10 data stream.

Irig - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Irig (Ириг) is a town and municipality in the Srem District of Vojvodina, Serbia.
In Serbian, the town is known as Irig or Ириг, in Croatian as Irig, in Hungarian as Ireg, and in German as Irick.
Since 1699, Irig was part of the Habsburg Monarchy, and since 1918, it was part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (later renamed to Yugoslavia).

That is all changing with the adoption of IRIG 106 Chapter 10, the Digital On-Board Recorder Standard, the culmination of several years’ cooperative effort by the Range Commanders Council, manufacturers and users.
IRIG 106 Chapter 10 defines the time source and a method of time, tagging the data that allows high accuracy in both absolute time and in relative time between signal channels.
The new IRIG 106 Chapter 10 standard is accelerating the migration to digital recording, as users recognize the benefits of digital technology.

IRIG Support Using Sun SPARC Audio
At the on-time epoch a timestamp is captured from the kernel clock and adjusted for the phase of the IRIG carrier signal relative to the 8-kHz codec sample clock.
Some IRIG timecode generators can indicate whether or not the generator is operating correctly or synchronized to its source of standard time using a designated field in the raw binary timecode.
This causes the IRIG code to be included in the BSD driver, as well as a C-coded codec interrupt routine which replaces the assembly-coded routine and provides the IRIG functionality.

 IRIG - Symmetricom
The need for IRIG standards is that standardization of time codes allows equipment to be synchronized to a known reference time.
The IRIG standard consists of a family of rate scaled serial time codes with formats containing up to three coded expressions or words.
The most common version of IRIG is IRIG-B. The IRIG-B pulse code contains one "frame" of 100 "elements" per second for the time of the year and GPS receiver status.

The driver determines which IRIG format is in use by sampling the amplitude of each filter output and selecting the one with maximum signal.
Where feasible, the IRIG signal source should be operated with signature control so that, if the signal is lost or mutilated, the source produces an unmodulated signal, rather than possibly random digits.
This is followed by the IRIG status indicator, year of century, day of year and time of day.

VTS Heartbeat, IRIG Standard, 1553 - L-3 Communications
System or IRIG time is embedded in each data block for direct file access to specific data for playback.
VTS decommutators are highly configurable to handle special requirements beyond standard IRIG formats (e.g., being able to support variable frame lengths found in “Burst Mode” or “Pass All Mode” to capture encrypted data and to then encode the data later for decryption before commutation).
Architected for flexibility, these decoms are capable of total hardware decommutation for very large frames, up to 128K words or more, with data frames sorted by parameter for display and archiving efficiency or by tag-data format for applications requiring data before receipt of an entire frame.

The History of IRIG Time Codes
Originally, the Inter-Range Instrumentation Group (IRIG) proposed a series of time code formats which later became the NASA codes.
Soon after these, another series called the IRIG Standard Time Code Formats was approved and has become the industry standard.
The codes, which have names like IRIG-A, IRIG-B, and so on through IRIG-H, differ in the frequency of the amplitude modulated carrier, which ranges from 100 Hz to 100 KHz, and the resolution of the time which may be encoded.

The original formats were described in IRIG Document 104-60, which was later revised and reissued in August 1970 as IRIG Document 104-70, leading to an upgrade later that year of the IRIG Document to the status of a Standard, IRIG Standard 200-70.
The most commonly used of the standards is IRIG B, then IRIG A, then probably IRIG G. Time code formats directly derived from IRIG H are used by NIST radio stations WWV, WWVH and WWVB.
The time frame for the IRIG B standard is 1 second, meaning that one data frame of time information is transmitted every second.

It may also be the result of an IRIG signature check which indicates a failure of the IRIG signal synchronization source.

Time codes may be used either as DC level shifts suitable for direct connection into digital systems or as amplitude-modulated audio tones suitable for recording on to magnetic tape or for transmission over some other band limited medium.
