Kagoshima Prefecture corresponds to the ancient Japanese provinces Osumi and Satsuma.
This region played a key role in the Meiji restoration, and the city of Kagoshima was an important naval base during Japan's 20th Century wars and the home of admiral Togo Heihachiro.
The City of Sendai, the Towns of Hiwaki, Iriki, Kedoin and Togo and the Villages of Sato, Kamikoshiki, Shimokoshiki and Kashima were merged to form the City of Satsumasendai (Satsumasendai-Shi).

Shimazu Yoshihisa was the eldest son of Shimazu Takahisa (1514-1571) and a lady of the Iriki-in family.
Once he had defeated his rivals in Satsuma and Ôsumi, and brought around the Iriki-in and Togo to his side, Yoshihisa was able to concentrate on his greatest threat: Ito Yoshisuke.
Like his father a leader of great energy, Yoshihisa was probably the greatest general Kyushu produced in the 16th Century, though his victories owed much to the skill of his brothers and the pure fighting qualities of the Satsuma warriors.
