A principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre, Irina Dvorovenko was born in Kiev, Ukraine, and began her ballet training at the Kiev Ballet School at the age of ten.
Dvorovenko was made a soloist in 1997 and was appointed principal dancer in 2000, following a stunning season which won her widespread critical and popular acclaim.
Dvorovenko brings a radiant beauty and serene elegance to all of her performances, and as one of American Ballet Theatre's most lyrical dancers, she is renowned for both her musicality and dazzling technique.

 - Dvorovenko and Beloserkovsky's Giselle, June 14 matinee, 200
Dvorovenko burst from her cottage door with high-voltage enthusiasm, acceding to Beloserkovksy's daisy-plucking shenanigans with glee.
Although she nailed Giselle's hopping ballonnés (Dvorovenko is the sort of dancer who likes to Nail Things), the rest of her "Spessitseva" solo was unfortunate, as she began with a big stabbing penchée on pointe that she bobbled a bit, and her pirouette combinations to the knee were abrupt and perfunctory.
In her debut, this seemed to me the epitome of Dvorovenko's memorably misguided artistic decisions, but yesterday it was one of the few moments of her portrayal which rang true, delivered with all the brio so oddly lacking in the rest of her performance.

I don't remember who Giselle or Albrecht were that night, but I won't soon forget Dvorovenko's icy ferocity and stage-spanning leaps -- hers was a Myrtha not to be trifled with, a vortex of anger and vengefulness rather than a magisterial Queen.
It's usually not a compliment to say of a dancer that she's herself first, and her roles second, yet Dvorovenko's smart enough to employ the formidable sense of self which she projects in a manner that augments both her own onstage persona and the choreography she's performing.
Like Van Hamel, another noteworthy Myrtha of years past, Dvorovenko seems currently to be ABT's Matinee Queen, and her stately progress through ABT's ranks is a clear indication that, these days, being an exquisitely trained Russian (rather, Ukrainian) is no longer a guarantee of a speedy entrance into American companies upper ranks.

Dvorovenko’s first scene, with her nurse and then with her parents and Paris, was marvelous.
I didn’t want to miss a single one of Dvorovenko’s slowly turning, endlessly mobile enveloppes, but I also couldn’t stand to miss the look on Beloserkovsky’s face when he first glimpses her.
Their duet in the empty ballroom was laudable not only for its lyricism, but also the readability and logic of every move, whether dramatic or balletic.

Dvorovenko has a fantastic grand jeté when her front leg flies higher than her waist, and this ballet gave her plenty of chances to display it.

Dvorovenko also strikes me as the kind of dancer who moves excellenty from pose to pose, but the flow between them isn't quite so interesting, or when the need for speed is there in the choreography presents itself, she falters slightly.
Most of the ballet (at least on Friday) was a very refined, straightforward classicism; then comes the Grand Pas, with its Hungarian-flavored steps and a bit of attitude thrown in for good measure.
It just seemed to me that she luxuriates in extended poses, like a huge arabesque, or a grand stance smiling big and brightly at the audience.
