Modern Jerusalem "lies near the summit of a broad mountain-ridge, which extends without interruption from the plain of Esdraelon to a line drawn between the southern end of the Dead Sea and the southeastern corner of the Mediterranean." This high, uneven table-land is everywhere from 20 to 25 geographical miles in breadth.

 Orthodox Land Scandal in Israel
JERUSALEM (ANS) -- Holy Week in Jerusalem is usually marked by time-honored Christian observances between Palm Sunday and Easter, but this year’s celebrations have been marred by daily protests of local Arab Christians outside the Church of Holy Sepulcher demanding the resignation of the Greek Patriarch for allegedly selling land to Jews.
Speaking from Jerusalem, Father Dimitrios, the secretary for the Holy Synod in Jerusalem, said the church in the Holy Land will start working to elect a "locum tenens"-- someone to execute the duties of the patriarch until a new one is installed.
It adds that, as per diplomatic sources, the developments at the Jerusalem Patriarchate should not lead to hasty decisions, since the laws binding the existence and operations of the Patriarchate are quite complicated and are based on both international and bilateral agreements.
