Iris is a 2001 film that tells the story of British novelist Iris Murdoch and her relationship with John Bayley.
When the young Iris Murdoch meets fellow student John Bayley at the University of Oxford, he is a naive virgin easily flummoxed by her libertine spirit, arch personality, and obvious artistic talent.
When Iris begins experiencing forgetfulness and dementia, however, the ever-doltish but devoted John struggles with hopelessness and frustration to become her caretaker, as his wife's mind deteriorates from the ravages of Alzheimer's disease.

Iris (2001) Movie Overview ~ Cast and Crew, Trailer, Pictures, Synopsis, Release Date - RopeofSilicon.com
Iris teems with fussy charm and the intimate joy found only in a lover's foibles.
The scenario tacks back and forth from the young Iris (Kate Winslet)--ready to seduce one and all with her coy command of words and sex appeal--to the elder Iris (Judi Dench)--slowly giving way to the cruel erasure of Alzheimer's--and it is impossible not to be moved by the film's denouement of loss.
The script, however, is painfully predictable and heavy-handed in its frequent use of symbolism (e.g., sheets of paper flying into the ocean, rocks slipping to the river's bottom).

Iris - a Movie Review of The Phantom Tollbooth
That's because the movie intentionally focuses on only two short periods of time--her courtship with John and the final two years of her life as she lost her battle against the disease.
The movie, directed and co-written by well-known theater director Richard Eyre, also uses an interesting cross-cutting structure, as it moves quickly between the young Iris (played by Kate Winslet) and John (Hugh Bonneville) and the much older Iris and John (Judi Dench and Jim Broadbent, respectively).
A scene of Iris meeting John melds into John and the ill Iris, taking a walk, or the young, naked Iris swimming in the river segues into the old Iris, complete with bathing suit, suddenly afraid of being under water.

Iris Movie Review at Hollywood Video
The courtship story line, with Kate Winslet playing Iris and Hugh Bonneville as Bayley, blends fluidly with the presentation of the couple in their senior years, when Judi Dench and Jim Broadbent take over the roles.
The film's central tragedy is conveyed by a comment the young Iris makes to John — "If one doesn't have words, how does one think?" The sad irony is that Alzheimer's makes it impossible for her to answer her own question.
While much newsprint has been spewed about whether or not the Titanic star is overweight, the far more important fact is what an astonishing actress she is. Nowhere is this more apparent than when the young Iris laughs as she accidentally slides down a flight of stairs at a dance.

Lee's Movie Info - 'Iris' Movie Review
Iris, starring Judi Dench and Kate Winslet as British author Iris Murdoch is a beautiful, heartfelt and heartbreaking film about Murdoch's battle with Alzheimer's.
The flashbacks give us a great understanding of the rebellious, somewhat iconoclastic nature of Murdoch, a woman who loves to drink, smoke, enjoy life and a woman who presumably had many suitors (and lovers), yet was intensely attracted to the shy, nerdy, Bailey, a man some seven years her junior.
Bailey was completely comfortable in his wife's shadow, yet in the end it was Iris who desperately needed her husband as her brilliant mind was being ravaged by Alzheimer's.
