That condition is briefly gestured toward in the movie Iris, but it is never made as real as either the excitements of the early courtship or the horrors of the later decline.
His sentences show us that John was a man capable of seeing Iris for who she was, the potentially ridiculous mixed with the utterly admirable; and they imply that she, in turn, was capable of loving him for the incisiveness and self-consciousness she lacked.
The movie, by tipping the balance of power in Iris's favor, does her a deep disservice, and it does us an injury, too, by depriving this real-life fairy tale of the delicate tragic balance John worked so hard to preserve.

Iris Murdoch was a prolific storyteller with a string of some 26 novels to her credit.
Young Iris, played by Kate Winslet, is a free-spirited artistic talent who has no doubt that she is destined for greatness as an author.
The story segues between the elder Iris and the life and loves of the young Iris (Winslet) as she single-mindedly authors her first book that she just knows will be published.

"Iris" ~~ a Movie Review by the Filmiliar Cineaste
Novelist Iris Murdoch, a writer and thinker of celebrated brilliance, suffered the mental deterioration of alzheimer's disease.
This movie version of those books conveys some idea of the respect in which he held her and his faithfulness as her capacities died away.
Despite this seamless matchup of characters, one is strained by the attraction John has to Iris as these characters are portrayed, though Winslet pulls out her kittenish powers to convince us of it, even while commandeering physical gratifications with other men.

SPLICEDwire | "Iris" review (2001) Richard Eyre, Judi Dench, Kate Winslet
The movie is a story of love sprung from intellect, and there is a uniformly artless romantic magic between these two actresses and their respective co-stars -- not a soft-focus melodrama affair, but simply two eccentrics awkwardly, warmly in love.
"Iris" is adapted from Bayley's biography of his wife, and Eyre infuses the film with the man's undying adoration and compassion for his wife without getting sappy or maudlin -- even after Murdoch's zealously sharp and insatiably philosophical mind becomes tragically ravaged by the effects of Alzheimer's disease.
John and Iris fell in love with each other's minds, and while the love remains, he knows every time he looks at her that the intellectual sparks that gave birth to it are gone forever.

 Iris: the painful AlZheimer
Iris is an all-round well-acted movie illustrating the effects of Alzheimer's and its effect on the brilliant mind of novelist Iris Murdoch.

 Iris (2001): Reviews
Iris is difficult to watch, given that it requires you to witness the transformation of the title character from a literate, vibrant woman to the ghost of her former self.
The movie's most artful feature is the fluidity with which the past slides into the present, echoing Murdoch's own unmoored sentience, so that the younger self, played with dash and vigor by Kate Winslet, turns into the old woman lost in her own home.
But because the genius of Iris Murdoch is given short shrift in favor of her personal idiosyncrasies, the ultimate tragedy of a brilliant mind lost becomes murky.

Iris - a Movie Review of The Phantom Tollbooth
That's because the movie intentionally focuses on only two short periods of time--her courtship with John and the final two years of her life as she lost her battle against the disease.
The movie, directed and co-written by well-known theater director Richard Eyre, also uses an interesting cross-cutting structure, as it moves quickly between the young Iris (played by Kate Winslet) and John (Hugh Bonneville) and the much older Iris and John (Judi Dench and Jim Broadbent, respectively).
A scene of Iris meeting John melds into John and the ill Iris, taking a walk, or the young, naked Iris swimming in the river segues into the old Iris, complete with bathing suit, suddenly afraid of being under water.

"Iris" falls into a category of movies I like to call "Sleeper Weepers," meaning you'll either be weeping for the film's main character, who undoubtedly goes through much tribulation and hardship, or you'll be rubbing your eyes open from sheer boredom and listlessness as the movie drones on and one seemingly without end.
The movie sees fit to shove symbolism and the elements of loss and love down our throats without abandon, which would work had director Richard Eyre been able to inject some measure of emotional resonance into the proceedings.
Perhaps the biggest disappointment in "Iris" is the lack of overall feeling one gets from watching Murdoch's life unfold in such a wearisome manner.
