  Irish Soldiers of the British Army
The 5th Royal Irish Lancers were raised in 1689 fought at the Battle of the Boyne and as Ross's Horse were sent to the Netherlands were disbanded in 1799 having being infiltrated by the United Irishmen.
The Royal Irish Rangers were merged with the Ulster Defence Regiment battalions and the London Irish Rifles in 1992 to form the Royal Irish Regiment.
The British Army had always used Irishmen, in fact it is has been said "the British Empire was won by the Irish, administered by the Scots and Welsh and the profits went to the English".

The Irish Army Ranger Wing (or Sciathán Fiannóglach na hAirm in Irish) is the special forces unit of the Irish Defence Forces.
The Army Ranger Wing is Ireland's premier hostage rescue unit, and trains closely with the specialised firearms service of the Garda Síochána (known as the Emergency Response Unit or ERU).
The Officer Commanding the Army Ranger Wing is responsible for the Administrative, Disciplinary and Operational control of the unit, and is in turn directly under the command of The Chief of Staff at Defence Forces HQ.

In the following year, the Irish army was assigned to the English army at the Battle of Falkirk in Scotland against Sir William Wallace, where on July 22, the Irish marched into battle line to the skirl of the warpipes as their cousins, the Scots, watched in amazment on the other side of the battlefield.
It was at Falkirk that the Scotsmen saw the martial effect of the bagpipes upon the Irish soldiers and thereafter began bringing bagpipes into battle and into the annals of history.1 The first mention of the Scots using their bagpipes in battle was at their victory at Bannockburn in 1314.

The Royal Irish Rangers became part of The King's Division whose first Colonel Commandant was Major General H E N (Bala) Bredin, CBE, DSO**, MC and bar, a Royal Ulster Rifleman and a strong believer in the Regimental system which he fostered within the Division.
Three centuries after the raising of those irregular companies at Enniskillen in December 1688, 1st Royal Irish Rangers were patrolling the streets and lanes of County Fermanagh, County Tyrone and County Armagh.
In 1990 2nd Royal Irish Rangers also carried out a tour in Northern Ireland during which a posthumous QGM was earned by Ranger Cyril Smith who gave his life to protect others in a PIRA proxy-bomb attack on the VCP at Killeen.
