Irish Congress of Trade Unions tells Labour Court of “compelling case for a significant rise” in the National Minimum ...
The Irish Congress of Trade Unions told the Labour Court today that there was a “compelling case for a significant rise” in the National Minimum Wage.
At a Labour Court hearing on the issue, Congress argued that a significant rise was necessary in order to keep pace with wage growth and price rises since 2005, when the wage was last adjusted, and prevent the emergence of a ‘two-tier’ workforce.
The Congress submission pointed out that all evidence indicated that the Minimum Wage increase in 2005 had not contributed to a growth in unemployment — if anything, the opposite was the case, while a rise would also have no impact on inflation or affect competitiveness.

Trades Union Congress - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Trade Unions Congress (TUC) is a federation of trade unions in the United Kingdom, representing the majority of labour unions.
The UK Association of Organised Trades, founded in Sheffield, Yorkshire, in 1866, was the forerunner of the TUC (though efforts to expand local unions into regional or national organisations date back at least forty years earlier; in 1822, John Gast formed a 'Committee of the Useful Classes', sometimes described as an early national trades council).
Arising out of the 1897 Congress, a decision was taken to form a more centralised trade union structure that would enable a more militant approach to be taken to fighting the employer and even achieving the socialist transformation of society.
