		As a result, the typical 18th and 19th century Irish diet of potatoes and buttermilk was a contributing factor in the population explosion that occurred in Ireland at that time.
		However, the damp Irish climate favours the spread of potato blight and this frequently led to shortages and famine.

		The Irish Derby is a Group 1 flat horse race in the Republic of Ireland for three-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies run over a distance of 1 mile 4 furlongs (2,414 metres) at the Curragh, County Kildare in late June / early July.
		It has been run annually since 1866 and is often contested by the leading horses from its English and French equivalents - the Epsom Derby and Prix du Jockey Club.
		Jack Moylan was the winning jockey in 1944 and 1945 riding Slide On and Piccadilly.

		With about 30 head in his string, give or take, the star at the moment is I'madrifter, a 3-time stakes-winner who was at one time considered one of the top NorCal prospects for the Kentucky Derby several years ago, and has bankrolled close to $300,000 in career earnings.
		It was suggested that given that layout, perhaps I'madrifter would be best suited for a race at Cal Expo, which has long favored front-end types with it's surface that some have likened to US 101.
