The support of the Irish farm organisations will be absolutely vital for ensuring a Yes vote on October 19, Irish Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said when meeting leaders of Ireland's giant agri-food sector in a bid to prevent a second rejection of the Nice Treaty.
Mr Ahern said he was "heartened" by the support already given from agri-food groups and he acknowledged that the rural vote could prove decisive.

However, the Minister for Agriculture and Food, Mr Walsh, who will negotiate the deal, said it was too early to make a definitive statement on the package, which should be concluded sometime next spring.
The EU Agriculture Commissioner, Mr Franz Fischler, acknowledged that some Irish beef producers were likely to produce less as a result of the reforms, and that this would mean less live exports, but he claimed that, overall, Irish farmers would benefit.

The Irish Minister for Agriculture and Food, Joe Walsh, announced this week that his revised proposals for the Rural Environmental Protection Scheme (REPS) have been passed from European Commission officials to the Agricultural Structures Committee for formal approval.
A pay increase of 28% is on the cards for Irish farmers who sign up to sustain the environment as part of their agriculture practice.
Approval is expected next Tuesday, earlier than the expected date at the end of the month, after Mr Walsh pressed the EU Agriculture Minister Franz Fischler to speed up the process.

The Irish Minister for Agriculture and Food, Mary Coughlan TD, yesterday announced that a new facility to register calf births online was now available to farmers through the Department’s website.
The Awards are supported by the Cabinet Office e-Government Unit, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, the Society of Information Technology Management (Socitm), and SOLACE (Society of Local Authority Chief Executives and Senior Managers).
The Minister said that this facility would augment the current procedures for registering calf births by providing farmers with the added option of completing applications over the Internet.

Mary Coughlan, has been appointed as Minister for Agriculture and Food in the shuffle of the Irish cabinet, September 29.
Coughlan formerly held the portfolio of Minister for Social and Family Affairs since 2002 and was previously (Junior) Minister of State for the Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands.
Her rural constituency is the capital of the Irish fishing industry and the geographical features of the constituency makes agricultural production difficult.

 Dept of Agriculture & Food- MINISTER SMITH CONGRATULATES NURSERY STOCK GROWERS INVOLVED IN €450M AMENITY HORTICULTURE INDUSTRY
Minister Smith said that greater disposable incomes and increased consumer interest in gardens and outdoor spaces present opportunities for producers of nursery stock, garden furniture and sundry supplies and he urged growers to “work together, pool ideas and develop strategies to increase sales and improve profit margins”.
Minister Smith said that all nursery stock producers should consider participating in the Bord Bia Nursery Quality Programme, which aims to help Irish nurseries attain 'best practice' in commercial nursery production and management systems.
Minister Smith said that he was pleased that his Department has been able to contribute to the development of the nursery stock sector over the last five years by providing grant aid under the National Development Plan 2000-2006.
