  Irish Silicon: Irish Communications Minister Dermot Ahern Announces First Towns For Group Broadband Scheme
Dermot Ahern T.D., Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources today announced the first three locations to benefit from the Governments €25 million Group Broadband Scheme to deliver high-speed broadband into our smaller communities over three years.
Representatives from the three towns met with the Minister in Dublin today where details were released on the grant-aid and technology which will be used.
The Minister said further small towns and villages with populations of less than 1,500 will be announced in the coming weeks.

Irish mobile telecoms company O2 has abolished inadvertent mobile phone roaming charges, meaning that customer in both the Republic and North of Ireland will not incur roaming charges if they cross the border.
Both Minister Dempsey and Northern Ireland Northern Enterprise Minister Angela Smith had raised the issue of inadvertent charges to all mobile service operators in Ireland and consequently a meeting with all mobile phone operators and regulators was held in London last September.
Minister Dempsey said that he hopes further progress would be made by end of March.

Speaking at the Energy Institute Annual Dinner on November 3rd, Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Noel Dempsey T.D., welcomed the recent decision by An Bord Pleanala to allow the construction of the gas terminal for the Corrib Gas Field.
In the area of offshore exploration Minister Dempsey said that he would shortly be giving consideration to further licensing in Atlantic Margin areas in keeping with Government policy of promoting active exploration.
