Fishing in the Irish Sea will end next year if a recommendation from one of the world's leading marine scientific bodies to ban cod catches there is accepted, the Irish Fishermen's Organisation has warned, writes Mark Hennessy, Political Reporter.
In 1986 over 10,000 tonnes of cod were caught in the Irish Sea, nearly 4,000 tonnes of which were netted by Irish-based trawlers.
The main spawning grounds for cod in the Irish Sea lie off the Co Down coast and east of the Isle of Man, with a smaller, less important one located off the Wexford coast.

The UK Government Review of Marine Nature Conservation set up the Irish Sea Pilot project in 2002 to test the potential for an ecosystem approach to managing the marine environment at a regional sea scale.
The advice and involvement from the Governments of Ireland and the Isle of Man as well as the Devolved Administrations of the UK and many Irish Sea stakeholders have contributed to the Pilot project.
The Irish Sea area was selected for the Pilot because it was considered to be one of the most ecologically-distinct regional seas around the UK.

We would expect the water to be browner and carrying more sediment during the winter months, to appear greener in spring as the plankton or algae in the water blooms and to appear blue as the waters clear during the summer months.
