In 2005 Irish Sugar announced that it would close its facility in Carlow, this was carried out on March 11 when the facility closed for the last time.

A second attempt to establish an Irish sugar company took place in 1926 with the establishment of the Irish Sugar Manufacturing Company in Carlow.
Irish management and workers quickly adapted to the situation and home-produced sugar supplies were successfully maintained from then onwards.
As existing privately-owned quarries were unable to meet the need, the Sugar Company opened its own quarries and soon had a fleet of 300 trucks taking the limestone around the country.

The grains of sugar were separated from the molasses, or moisture, run through a drier to become the product known as granulated sugar, and then packaged.
The sugar mill normally operated for about 100 days, from October to January, during what was termed the "campaign season." Macomb Sugar's first campaign, however, lasted only 28 days because of a delayed harvest of substandard beets, caused by heavy rains.
The company was reorganized in 1904 and 1905, and as a result Captain James E. Davidson of Bay City became the sole owner and changed the name to Mount Clemens Sugar Company.
