The general election took place in 41 parliamentary constituencies throughout the Republic of Ireland for 166 seats in the lower house of parliament, Dáil Éireann.
The general election of 1989 was precipitated by the defeat of the minority Fianna Fáil government in a private members motion regarding the provision of funds for AIDS sufferers.
In all the general election was a disaster for all the parties concerned.

The Irish general election of 1922 took place in Southern Ireland on June 16, 1922, under the provisions of the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty to elect a constituent assembly paving the way for the establishment of the Irish Free State.
For Irish Republicans this chose the membership of the Third Dáil of the Irish Republic; under the provisions of the treaty it was a provisional parliament replacing the parliament of Southern Ireland.
As in the Irish elections, 1921 in the south, Sinn Féin stood one candidate for every seat, except those for the University of Dublin and one other; the treaty had divided the party between 65 pro-treaty candidates, 57 anti-treaty and 1 nominally on both sides.

The two officers most closely involved in the Irish Republic's contribution to the bombing investigation, Assistant Garda Siochana Commissioner Kevin Carty and Detective Superintendent Tadgh Foley informed Mr O'Donoghue on Wednesday night of their decision to be at the meeting.
An Irish government spokesman said the two men were in the north "for the sole purpose of briefing the relatives on the state of the investigation in the Republic".
