Irish pound - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The coin was almost identical in dimensions to the old penny coin that circulated before 1971, and was quite similar in diameter to, but thinner, than the half-crown coin.
The coin featured a milled edge unique in Irish coinage.
During the early circulation of the coin, many payphone and vending machines which had been changed to accept the pound coin also accepted the old penny because of the similar size, the latter coin which was no longer legal tender and had little value to collectors.

 British Copper-Nickel Coins 1947-1970
Crowns were not included among the denominations produced regularly for circulation, so this left the half crown of George VI as the most valuable coin in domestic circulation during the transition from silver to copper-nickel.
The reverse of this coin was the work of Edgar Fuller and Cecil Thomas, and it depicts a crown at center, surrounded by two shields with the arms of England and one each of the Scottish and Irish arms.
As a final tribute to the system of coins which had served Britain so well for centuries, a complete proof set from half penny through half crown was minted in 1970, the last date to bear these denominations and designs.

 Coin Collecting
The coins that were struck during this ten-year period consist of the gold half-sovereign, crown and half-crown and the silver shilling, sixpence, groat, threepence, half-groat and three-farthings.
Some of the coins have a definite Anglo-Scottish flavour as witness the thistle-crown, a gold coin with a crowned rose on the obverse and a crowned thistle on the reverse and the silver half-groat, penny and halfpenny which also bear these emblems.
This coin was equal to 4s 6d, and was the first of the `crown' denomination that was continued in subsequent reigns both in gold and as a silver coin equalling 5s.

Irish farthings: [ + a pic of the precursor to American cent; size that is]Charles II granted a patent to strike farthings for Ireland to Sir Thomas Armstrong in 1660.
In 1670 the weight of the coin was reduced from 8.4—8.5 g to 8.3—8.4 g, but the price of gold continued to increase, and by the 1680s the coin was worth 22 shillings.
A sovereign was a gold coin worth 22s 6d until the reign of Charles I, later £1.

Summary of the proceedings of the committee
Furthermore, where the coins will differ only slightly in size, as in the case of the half-crown and the florin on the one hand, and the sixpenny and threepenny pieces on the other, our aim has been to provide for designs which will be very dissimilar and easily distinguishable.
Lastly, as it is assumed that the inscription on the coins will be in Irish only, we think it is advisable, in order to minimise the possibility of confusion, to recommend that the denomination should generally be indicated by numerals as well as by words.
The Act prescribed the denominations and weights of the coins and the metals of which they were to be composed, but it did not determine their designs: it left the choice of designs to the Minister for Finance and gave him power to prescribe the designs by Order.

Irish Coins Bulk Lots - allcoininfo.com
We believe the most successful Rare Coin portfolios were built in down markets by systematically assembling a variety of choice, rare, and desirable coins, with a three to five year, or longer, holding period in mind.
Some coins are common in worn, circulated grades, yet there could be only five coins known to exist in higher mint-state grades of MS-63 to MS-65.
In our opinion, these coins are always in demand by collectors and will be the easiest coins to liquidate later, and turn the best profits.

 Irish Milled Coinage (1680 - 1823)
In April 1690 James was running short of brass and he reduced the size of the gunmoney coins and issued a smaller shilling and halfcrown, there was an overlap between the introduction of the small coins and the cessation of production of the large ones.
As is the way with such things the Irish forged coppers with US attributable legends such as 'George President' or 'George Washington' (instead of 'Georguis III Rex') are much more sought after than the coins with Irish or English references in their legends despite being no more scarce.
These tokens are often included in the Irish coin series (along with the later Voce Populi tokens) as they were clearly a significant issue and as they seem to have circulated without difficulty despite being unatributed.

John Derbyshire on Ireland on National Review Online
Irish terrorists, like their Palestinian comrades, speak from one side of their mouths, in English, for public consumption, but out of the other, in their own language, when addressing their own followers.
Meanwhile, the poor old Irish language itself is on its last legs — "laid out on a slab" says Kevin Myers in a hilarious piece in The Irish Times.
It is illegal, in fact, in the Irish Republic, which has a perfectly good army of her own.

Inchiquin - Dublin Money - Crown
This coin is a crown (five shilling piece) struck under the authority of the Lord Justices of Ireland in about 1642.
It was originally believe that these coins were issued by Lord Inchiquin, but their issue by the Lord Justices in 1642 is now well established.
Note that this coin was struck on each side from the same punch - therefore the coin was made in two strikings not just one.

 Catalog of Irish Coin Prices
Coins which are listed as rare (or which are in exceptionally good condition for their type) will often sell for closer to the collector's buying price because a dealer will be happy to carry a desireable item at a smaller markup.
Coins listed in this catalog which are common (or in lower grade than is readily available for the type) are provided with prices.
Sellers of coins, either to dealers or at auction, will generally get less than these prices because the eventual buyer will end up paying either the dealer's markup or the auctioneer's fees which will account for the difference.

 EDWARD DE BONO
Incentives of a monetary kind would be most welcome in a region where the phrase 'loyal to the half-crown (coin), not to the Crown' is often heard.
I was brought up as a catholic in scotland, with irish grandparents and from an early age it was sort of ingrained (not taught) that protestants could not be your friends, and that they were "different" for want of a better word.
If the burgeoning middle class can be persuaded that their standard of living will remain unaffected in any deal (and surely this can be done with the current bouyancy of the Irish economy) then that is a fairly large proportion of the loyalist community taken care of.
