With apologies to those bands that never considered themselves a part of the "showband scene," we feel this is the only unique term that aptly describes the industry which flourished in Ireland for over forty years.
Prior to the showbands, most "bands" in Ireland in the early 50's were similar to the "big bands" of the 1940's or orchestras.
Names like the The Royal Showband featuring Brendan Bowyer, The Miami featuring Dickie Rock, and The Capitol Showband featuring Butch Moore took the country by storm and at it's peak, it is estimated that 700 to 800 showbands toured Ireland continuously (we currently list over 850 on our showband page).

With the show's demise, the group again toured extensively in Canada, appearing in small communities as well as larger centres until it reduced its itinerary in 1987.
The Showband's early repertoire of traditional Irish material was eventually augmented by songs in country and country-gospel styles.
Feeney, Grew, McManus, and White remained with the Showband when it recorded a 25th-anniversary album for its own CSB label in 1988, at which time the group also included longtime members Gregory Donaghey (vocals) and Roddy Lee (drums, vocals).

The rise of Irish folk began in the 60's with bands like The Clancy Brothers with Tommy Makem and The Dubliners, but in the early 70's, a new Irish folk/trad style took the world by storm in the wake of Planxty, Clannad, the Bothy Band and others that pioneered a "new" Irish sound.

Younger readers are probably bored to tears listening to their parents talking about the 60s and the showband years in this country.
But I was fascinated by a poll last week which sought to determine the Top 100 Irish showband and beat-group records of the 60s.
The showband era limped into the mid 70s and there were a lot of good records released in those years but they were excluded from the poll which was restricted to 60s releases only.

At 21 I was fully professional in an Irish showband and finished a degree in Sociology and Politics in the back of the band wagon.

When the Irish showbands would come across to play, the Orchestra would play the first two hours of the night and the showband would play the last two.
Brendan had developed his bass "chops" playing every night in London and when five members of The Jim Farley Showband decided to go their own way, they knew he was the man to complete the new Express Showband.

Wildwood, NJ - One of the biggest Irish festivals in the country will be held Sept. 23 to 26, 2004 in North Wildwood as the Cape May County Ancient Order of Hibernians presents its 13th annual Irish Fall Festival.
The yearly celebration of Irish heritage is expected to draw as many as a quarter of a million people to the resort of the Wildwoods for the festival.
