Irish twins - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Irish twins is a slang term that refers to siblings born 9 to 12 months apart - usually in the same calendar year, or who are in the same class in school.
The term is considered both endearing and misguided (for instance, Irish birthrate is about same as USA birthrate, see birth rate).
It references a perception about families of Irish Catholics who may not use birth control (and thus may have children in quicker succession), but it is often used endearingly by the families of the "twins" themselves.

 Issue of January 25, 2004
"Irish twins" are two children born to the same mother within one twelve-month period.
The use of "Irish" as a derogatory prefix in a variety of vernacular terms dates back to at least the 17th century, and arose largely in response to large-scale Irish immigration into both England and America.
Thus "Irish confetti" was slang for bricks used as projectiles, an "Irish kiss" was a slap in the face, an "Irish banjo" was a shovel, and so on.

The first book, The Dutch Twins, published in 1911, was about two five-year-old twins, Kit and Kat, who spend many happy hours fishing off the pier, helping their Father garden, skating on frozen canals, and celebrating St. Nicholas Day.
The titles came to be collectively called the Twins of the World Series and Perkins produced a title every year for the next quarter century.
