Seeing the world through rose-colored glasses: Scotopic Sensitivity/Irlen Syndrome: Helen Irlen and her followers ...
The Irlen method, named for its founder Helen Irlen, involves the use of colored lenses or overlays, which she argues improve reading skills, memory, and depth perception, as well as helping persons with learning disabilities and autism learn better.
Irlen likes to associate her Institute, located in Long Beach, California, with universities, and the annual Irlen conferences are usually held at a prestigious campus.
Irlen's use of testimonials, the poorly controlled studies done in the first half of the last decade, together with the hypothetical SSS model, probably all contributed to the neglect of research concerning visual processes involved in reading, especially in mainstream special education.

Irlen describes SSS as a visual-perceptual dysfunction involving excess sensitivity of the retina to particular frequencies of light.
Although Irlen and proponents of her method routinely refer to SSS as though it were an accepted medical syndrome, many experts question its validity.
Irlen's theory of SSS and the mechanism of precision tints is vague and purely speculative.

Scotopic sensitivity syndrome - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Irlen named her findings "scotopic sensitivity", though the discussions and debates over the following years often referred to it as Meares-Irlen Syndrome.
Testing for Scotopic Sensitivity were also taken up by Optahmologists in UK hospitals using a technique called Colorimeter and an organisation run by Opthamologists called Brain Power International also produced its own affordable self testing set of therapeutic tints for Scotopic Sensitivity, including a set specific to the autistic population.
When patients exhibiting the Irlen Syndrome were treated with vision therapy, their symptoms were relieved.

Today, approximately 96,000 people worldwide use Irlen filters and more than 3,000 US school districts screen for the disorder, according to the for-profit Irlen Institute, which estimates that roughly half the people with reading disorders could be helped by the Irlen Method.
Irlen said her colored glasses work by filtering out distracting visual information and allowing people to better focus on the words.
Irlen critics don't take stock in those studies because they believe the samples are too small, and the study designs are flawed.

 Healthy Living - Reading Through Rose-Colored Glasses - Spring / Summer 2005
Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome (SSS), or Irlen Syndrome, was identified in the early 1980s by Helen Irlen, a California State University educational psychologist who was conducting research on 37 adults with learning disabilities for the National Institute of Health.
Irlen found that some people have a perceptual disorder that causes them to read slowly and inefficiently, accompanied by frustration and fatigue.
Irlen found the disorder could be improved by overlaying printed pages with colored plastic sheets, which she later patented, along with colored glasses and contact lenses, as Irlen Filters.

Helen Irlen suggests that there are people whose problem is not in the processing of information but in the inability to get it through one of the channels, viz.
She states that these individuals are highly sensitive to particular wavelengths and frequencies of the white light spectrum leading to rapid fatigue after only short periods of reading, thus giving rise to a reading disability, headaches and stress.
