Stomp Tokyo Review - Irma La Douce (1963)
Irma La Douce, like Pretty Woman, is a movie about a prostitute who falls in love with a "respectable" man. Likewise, the respectable man falls in love with her, despite her occupation.
Irma, as previously mentioned, is a hooker who works a particular street in the Paris red light district.
Irma is a perfect role for MacLaine: saucy, wisecracking, and with a morality of her own.

 Amazon.co.uk: Irma La Douce [1963]: DVD: Jack Lemmon,Shirley MacLaine,Lou Jacobi,Bruce Yarnell,Herschel Bernardi,Hope ...
Irma La Douce reunited The Apartment team of Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine with director Billy Wilder in an adaptation of the stage musical of the same name which had been a hit in Paris, London and New York.
Background here is a complimentary term, for whatever qualms one might entertain as to this move, the two sets of themes are skilfully woven together by Previn and emerge as a witty and lyrical aural delight in their own right which is given due prominence on the soundtrack.
Wilder is no rush to tell prostitute Irma's story: her affair with Lemmon being the pivot of the tale as he takes on the disguise of an English Lord.

Irma la Douce - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Irma la Douce is a 1956 French stage musical whose book and lyrics were written by Alexandre Breffort with music by Marguerite Monnot.
The musical tells the story of an impoverished law student, Nestor le Fripé, who falls in love with a prostitute, Irma la Douce, and becomes her protector and dependant.
When the older man disappears, Nestor is convicted of murder and sent to Devil's Island but he escapes and returns to Irma when he hears that she is pregnant.

 Irma la Douce
Nestor is jealous of Irma's customers and decides he must become her only buyer, so he disguises himself as Monsieur Oscar, a rich old fossil who asks only companionship, yet provides enough grisbi (money) to become her exclusive patron.
Irma decides that Oscar is not getting his money's worth and seduces him more passionately than she ever has Nestor.
When he learns Irma is with child he escapes on a raft and finally proves (by paying off the judge) that he and Oscar are one and the same - all this in time to witness the birth of his child on Christmas Eve.

A slightly untidy gentleman steals himself into Irma's bed again, always hoping she won't wake up...Irma's life underwent a drastic change too: Her relationship with Lord X is strictly platonic and Nestor is always tired.

While I cannot say that Irma La Douce is in the same league as The Apartment, which is really up there with Sunset Boulevard and Stalag 17 as one of Wilder’s (and, therefore, film’s) very best, there is some decent comedy to be had in any case.
Irma, in turn, sees something in this guy as well -- he is honest and a nice guy, unlike her abusive pimp, and the other guys who only want her for a good time.
Irma La Douce is essentially a farce, which is possibly why the film isn’t as good as Billy Wilder’s best movies (although Some Like it Hot, also a very screwy comedy, is a classic).

 'Irma La Douce'
Irma La Douce, when you get right down to it, is simply a cosy little musical about the work ethic.
Irma's work is a bit more demanding than some, and she apparently gives it her full attention, but when she falls in love in the first scene with the naive law student who gallantly protects her from her own protector by waving his law book, her "bourgeois" emotion momentarily interrupts her career.
The mischievous little plot tells how Irma falls in love with a penniless law student, who becomes jealous of her numerous admirers.

Irma La Douce was derived from a stage musical, and the resulting Wilder film has all the colour, stageyness and simplicity of storytelling and characterisation of a musical — but without the songs.

Irma La Douce is a below-par film for Billy Wilder and doesn’t quite work as a drama when removed from its musical roots, but by anyone else’s standards, it’s quite a good film.

"Irma la Douce" was a stage musical, and Wilder set out to direct it as a musical movie, but kept cutting songs until none were left.
Many of these require Irma to be very stupid, though other elements of the plot require her to be fairly savvy.
That "Irma la Douce" was smuttier than Hollywood movies of the time were allowed to be undoubtedly explains some of its box office success, along with the popularity of its stars (and some fans of the play?).

Irma La Douce is a rare Billy Wilder film that I don't particularly like.
My favorite example is when Irma (Shirley MacLaine), who plays a prostitute, is telling about one John she had that paid her so much for his two visits a week that he was her only customer.
Another character asks what happened to him and she says, "His wife died so he didn't have to come to me anymore." Ouch.

However, during the fracas with the street-walkers he meets Irma (Shirley MacLaine), the most successful of the bunch, who has a no-nonsense (and unapologetic) approach to her profession, as well as the proverbial heart of gold.
Zaniness abounds when Irma finds herself falling in love with the understanding, undemanding Lord X, while she starts to suspect that Patou's nightly absences mean that he's cheating on her.
How much one enjoys Irma La Douce will certainly depend on one's appreciation of Lemmon (and mine is admittedly low), and MacLaine (where mine is a little higher).

On the plus side of the Irma ledger, there are scintillating performances by Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine, a batch of jovial supporting portrayals, a striking physical production and a number of infectious comedy scenes.
