Bartenieff, a physical therapist, is most noted for her integration of Laban Movement Analysis into her practice of physical therapy and dance therapy.
Derived from her work with Laban, she provided a system for dance therapists to notate and codify movements, which served the crucial purpose of organizing and anylizing therapy sessions and movement studies.

At the time, Bartenieff and her assistants were applying Effort/Shape in various projects in diverse areas such as psychology, physical therapy, child development, and dance.
Bartenieff’s work and that of her assistants required more trained personnel, and they began to receive many training requests from professionals who wanted to use the work in their own fields.
Consequently, in the fall of 1965 Bartenieff and her assistants Forrestine Paulay and Martha Davis, established an Effort/Shape Training Program at the Dance Notation Bureau with the support of its directors and the assistance of Betty Meredityh-Jones, a movement specialist who had studied extensively with Laban.

Bartenieff Fundamentals (B.F.) is an example of a specific application of B.E.S.S. This extension of L.M.A. was originally developed by Irmgard Bartenieff who had trained in dance with Laban before becoming a physiotherapist.
Bartenieff Fundamentals are currently used by dancers, actors, athletes and anyone interested in improving the ease, efficiency, and quality of their movement.
In my opinion, the real beauty of L.M.A. as a system is the way it integrates all of the modalities of B.E.S.S. The theme of integration is extremely relevant to our society at this time in history, when more and more people are experiencing fragmentation and compartmentalization in their lives.
