Topic: Ironmongers

A Fifteenth-Century Tennis Court in London
The original Ironmongers' Hall fronted on to Fenchurch Street, while the Clothworkers retained the ownership of the remainder of the property with frontages on to Billiter Lane and Culver Alley.
Alongside the Ironmongers' Hall stood a tenement called The Tenys Pley, which was mentioned in the will of John Yonge, 'Citizen and Tailor of London' in 1480.' He had been mentioned as 'keeper of the tennis play' in the records of The Ironmongers' Company for 1471.
Several entries in the Ironmongers' accounts refer to rent paid 'for the bordes standing uppon our walls next to the tennis play' from which it appears that the height of the garden wall was raised to make it more suitable as a main wall for the tennis court.

Four groups of ironmongers - those who were hatmakers and bakers but not artists, those who were bakers and dressmakers but not carpenters, those who were dressmakers and foresters but not embroiderers, and those who were foresters and hatmakers but not gravediggers - spent the day having a picnic on the other side of town.
