  myArmoury.com: The French
Their cavalry centered on the gendarmerie using their old tactics, though with unarmoured horses, supplemented by German reiters (heavy cavalry with pistols using "caracole" tactics based on firepower), and similar French pistoliers and mounted arquebusiers, now referred to as "carabins".
The cavalry were dependent upon the "squirearchy" of the Protestant areas, who produced a brave and Ironside-like horse, distinguished by the long-sleeved white casaques they wore over their armour in old fashioned style (their opponents nicknamed them "Millers").
The square cavalry flags of the late 16th and 17th Centuries would also be fringed; apart from the devices mentioned, they could carry others common at the time, such as the "Fortuna" shown, arms holding swords and so forth, and bore a variety of mottoes and slogans.

  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Ironside (cavalry)
Ironside was the name given to a trooper in the cavalry formed by English political leader Oliver Cromwell in the 17th century.
The Ironsides' use of armour and their disciplined formation and obedience to their commanders, at a period when the majority of both armies consisted largely of ill-equipped rabble, made them virtually invincible.
The Ironsides were Puritans who often attributed their glory in battle to God, whom they believed they were fighting for.

In English history Ironside or Ironsides first appears as the name of Edmund II., king of the English.

Eagle Games Forums: Cavalry to strong?
Cavalry is strong in combat, but a mixed troop has its advantages too, like the +1 modifier when all three types are in one battle zone.
This is because the Infantrymen hardened to the march and the Cavalry horses weakened.
The advantages of Cavalry should be expressed in setting the conditions of the battle (superior scouting, the ability to force the operational level pace, etc.) and an ability to strike a decisive blow after an opponent has broken, an so on.

His infantry were principally highlanders drawn from a number of Clans, whilst the cavalry were composed of Gordons and Ogilvies with the addition of gentlemen volunteers from many families, including the Livingstons and Flemings.
Bidding his men to cast off their plaids for ease of movement, he sent the Gordon cavalry against the nose of the column and the body of MacLean infantry to seize the farmsteadings of Auchinvalley, lying between his main body and the Covenanting centre.

In the fourteenth and fifteenth centurys, which is about when plate armor was really in use, a full harness weighed from about 65 to 85 pounds, rarely more and that in the case of an exceptionally large person.
It wouldn't surprise me to hear that the average cavalry horse of the mid-nineteenth century was expected to carry more weight.
Unless they were much bigger and stronger (which from other discussion here I doubt) the horses of the Ironside Cavalry had a more difficult time as 17th century armor - such as would have been worn by Gustavus Adolphus or Cromwell-is quite a bit heavier than the earlier forms.
