 Concretions Thunder Eggs and Geodes
Ironstone concretions are common around Sydney, with its outcrops of iron-rich shale and sandstone.
The box-like shape of some ironstone concretions can often depend on the way a shale or sandstone bed breaks up into regular blocks of various sizes under the action of weathering.
In these ironstone concretions, ground water dissolves iron compounds from the inner portion of a block, then deposits them again as insoluble iron oxide-hydroxide in the outer parts, cementing together grains in the original rock to make that zone harder.

 Collecting Ironstone
Most ironstone was manufactured in England and exported to the United States where it was prized for its attractive shapes as well as its durability.
Because it was made in large quantities for a long period of time, this sturdy ceramic ware is readily available to modern collectors who enjoy it for the same reasons that led to its immense popularity in an earlier time.
Most early ironstone was made in the Staffordshire district of England because of the abundance of clay and the proximity of a seaport to ship the finished wares to America and Europe.

 The Origin of Ironstone
The term 'ironstone' was coined by the Mason family partnership when Charles James Mason registered their 'Patent Ironstone China' in July 1813.
That his precautions were well-founded is testified by the subsequent roll-call of no less than 172 ironstone manufacturing firms established or merged in Staffordshire since the early 1800s, many using a style of mark intended to suggest a Mason's origin.
Though ironstone manufacturers continued into our own century, many of the later wares simply repeat the ironstone style of the first half of the 19th century, echoing the works of makers such as Spode/Copeland, Hicks and Meigh, Folch, Ridgway, but above all, Mason's.

English ironstone production began early in the 1800s and the earliest ironstone items were generally sold after being decorated with any of a number of motifs -- copies of Oriental patterns, historical blue, flow blue, mulberry, all-over lustre applications, gaudy designs and numerous others.
All-white ironstone was a huge success with the North American consumer and sold well for scores of potters whose output was destined for the United States and Canada.
As was the case with the body styles themselves, early application of copper lustre to white ironstone started simply, with the addition of lustre banding or enhancement along the rims, finials and handles of hollowware and flat pieces.
