, a district and town in the Irrawaddy division of Lower Burma, in the delta of the Irrawaddy.
The principal river of the district is the Irrawaddy, which debouches on the sea at its eastern extremity through a delta intersected with salt water creeks, among which the Pyamalaw, Pyinzalu, Kyunt6n, and Ngawun Shagegyi or Bassein river rank as important arms of the sea.
The delta of the Irrawaddy forms, wherever cultivable, a vast sheet of rice, with cotton, sesamum, and tobacco as subsidiary crops.

It stretches from north to south in one vast plain, forming the valley of the Irrawaddy, and is divided by that river into two nearly equal portions.
Numerous torrents pour down from the two boundary ranges, and unite in the plains to form large streams, which fall into the chief streams of the district, which are the Irrawaddy, Hlaing and Bassein, all of them branches of the Irrawaddy.
Meanwhile/in Tharawaddy, or the country east of the Irrawaddy, and in the south of Henzada, much disorder was caused by a revolt, the leaders of which were, however, defeated by the British and their gangs dispersed.

Whilst the advance of 33 Corps to the Irrawaddy is attracting the Japanese attention, 4 Corps is moving southward tot he west of the Chindwin with the intention of crossing the Irrawaddy near Meiktila.
In the 33 Corps sector on the mainland, Monywa on the Chindwin, is taken by the 20th Indian Division.
Inland, in the advance of 4 Corps to the Irrawaddy, Pauk is taken by the 7th Indian Division.

It was decided that the XXXIII Corps should drive straight for the Irrawaddy from Kalewa, while the IV Corps, now under General Messervy, moved down the Gangaw valley with the object of crossing the river farther south behind the Japanese main forces at Mandalay.
The 7th Division formed part of the IV Corps and was to move on Pakokku, on the Irrawaddy.
Myitche was situated on the Irrawaddy, so the Battalion had the distinction of being the first troops to reach the river south of Mandalay.

The Chinese 55th Division retreating from Mauchi is effectively destroyed by the Japanese 56th Division.
The Allied forces in the Sittang and Irrawaddy Valleys are forced to retreat because the Japanese 56th Division has forged on from Taunggyi towards Lashio, threatening the left flank of the Allied Armies.
Orders are given to the 14th Indian Division, advancing slowly into the Arakan, to reach a line between Rathedaung and Buthidaung, by the start of December in preparation for further operations towards Akyab.

Two fishing boats from Kantame Village, Dedaye Township in the delta region of Irrawaddy are still missing after the tsunamis hit coast along Burma on 26 December.
These boats have been fishing on the sea, between the offshore locations between Irrawaddy Division and Tenesserim Division, and it is not known exactly in which area the fishing boats went missing.
The elected representative (MP) of Depaye, Dr. Myo Nyunt told DVB that as the Burmese marine authorities have been unable to provide useful information and rescue efforts with coastguards, the remaining relatives of the fishermen are still waiting for the news from their loved ones.

They have, however, reported casualties and destruction in Tenasserim (Tanintharyi) Division, Rangoon (Yangon) Division, Pegu (Bago) Division, Irrawaddy (Ayerwaddy) division, Arakan (Rakhine) State, and in southern Shan State, mostly along the coats line, and caused by the earthquake as well as by the tidal waves.
The worse affected regions are reported to be Tenasserim Division bordering Thailand in Eastern Burma and Irrawaddy Division as well as Arakan State in Western Burma.
Population density: Irrawaddy Division is densely populated, with about 5,61 million inhabitants and a density of 169 people per sq.km., as compared to 1,07 million inhabitants and 25 people per sq.km in Tenasserim.

October 10, 2001— The junta released five political prisoners yesterday in what they are calling a "goodwill gesture" to mark the beginning of a two week visit to Rangoon by a UN team sent to investigate political and civil rights in Burma.
The prisoners were all National League for Democracy (NLD) members as well as elected Members of Parliament (MP).
The political prisoners freed yesterday are Tun Win, Min Don Constituency, Magwe Division, Kyi Lwin, Ngaphe Constituency, Magwe Division, Min Swe, Pyapon Constituency Two, Irrawaddy Division, Kyi Myint, Latha Constituency, Rangoon Division and Dr. Myo Nynt, Dedaye Constituency One, Irrawaddy Division.

An official from the Marine Administration Department in charge of offshore fishing in the area admitted that the missing boats were registered at his department but insisted that no report on the loss or damage has been received.
Although responsible officials are denying the truth, Rangoon-based International Federation of the Red Cross, IFRC, reported 47 dead and 76 fishing boats missing in Irrawaddy Division alone due to the quake and subsequent tsunamis.

Feb 22, 2005 (DVB) - 12 National League for Democracy (NLD) members from Bogale Township in the delta region of Irrawaddy Division, who had been detained and tried for trying to celebrate the Burmese National Day, were released by a court in nearby Pyapon on 22 February.
Pyapon Township court postponed the sentencing three times, and the accused were released after they were found not guilty of Act 3/90 with which they were charged.
Irrawaddy Division NLD chairman U Hla Pe told DVB that the NLD members are innocent all along and they were deliberately trapped and arrested by the township authorities, causing them and their family members many kinds of problems.

Ashin Sakkinda was born in Yekansu Village, Butalin Township, Sagaing Division, Myanmar (Burma) on the 8th of February 1955.
He received the higher ordination as a bhikkhu on the 3rd of July 1975 at the Mogoke Khanda Sima of Amrpura Mahagandhayone Monastery under the preceptorship of Aggamahapandita Sayadaw Ashin Janakabhivamsa.
His supporters of the four requisites were U Thein Maung and Daw Ohn of Mawlamyaingkyun, Irrawaddy Division.
