Informat.io on Tropical And Subtropical Moist Broadleaf Forests
Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests, also known as tropical rain forests or tropical wet forests, are a tropical and subtropical biome.
Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests are found in a belt around the equator and in the humid subtropics, and are characterized by warm, humid climates with high year-round rainfall.
Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests are common in several terrestrial ecozones, including parts of the Afrotropic (equatorial Africa), Indomalaya (parts of the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia), the Neotropic (northern South America and Central America), Australasia (eastern Indonesia, New Guinea, and northern Australia), and Oceania (the tropical islands of the Pacific Ocean).

The biome proportionate types of forests, plus lowland hot rain forests, which corral alpine rainfall year-round; moist deciduous and semi-evergreen forests, with alpine all-embracing rainfall marked by robust seasonal variations; montane rain forests convention in cooler-climate mountainous areas; and freshwater swamp forests and peat swamp forests.
Tropical and subtropical moist broadleaf forests are convention in a belt proximal the equator and in the humid subtropics, and are characterized by warm, humid climates with alpine year-round rainfall.

At the center of this ecoregion is the Irrawaddy River basin, whose ancient sands contain fossils of creatures both terrestrial and aquatic.
Today, amid moist deciduous forests, present-day mammals and birds can be found in abundance, although they are limited to those few areas protected from development.
Conversion of forests to agriculture and shifting cultivation remain the most persistent threats to this ecoregionâs biodiversity.

Terrestrial Ecoregions -- Irrawaddy moist deciduous forests (IM0117)
Moist deciduous forests dominate this ecoregion but are found not only in the Irrawaddy River Basin but also throughout the country along the Chindwin, Sittang, and Salween rivers.
Conversion of forests to agriculture and shifting cultivation is prevalent.
The dry, seasonal vegetation in the Irrawaddy Valley is represented by the Irrawaddy Moist Deciduous Forests [IM0117] and Irrawaddy Dry Forests [IM0205], which comprise the teak (Tectona grandis)-dominated moist deciduous forests and the drier patches of Dipterocarpus-dominated dry deciduous forests, respectively.

In its primeval state the truly lowland wet evergreen forests of this subregion exhibits four storeys: the emergent trees (60 m), the dominant and codominant trees in the second storey (45 m), an intermediate layer of trees with canopies between 23 m and to 30 m and the suppressed vegetation.
Tropical moist deciduous forests occur mainly in India, Nepal and Bangladesh in zones where the mean temperatures of the year vary from 20 to 30°C and rainfall between 1 300 and 2 000 mm, and with a dry season of 4–5 months.
Moist teak forests as a rule are a mixture of species, although relatively pure associations in the upper canopy are fairly frequent.

Forests in Thailand are concentrated mostly in the north, but there are some large patches in the south east which lie within protected areas (Map 1).
Of the forest types which only occur in one country with very little protection, the tropical sclerophyllous dry forest occurs in only one ecological zone, but the other, non-tropical freshwater swamp forest, occurs in three, and is only protected in one (Table 3).
Some of these forest variants may indeed be truly rare and unprotected types, others are clearly fragments of forest at the end of their ranges, as for example certain types of dry forest should not normally occur in moist ecological zones, or vice versa.

The climax vegetation in coastal areas is lowland rainforest with mangroves and freshwater swamp in the Irrawaddy Delta and flood plain.
These are, in turn, surrounded by a fringe of moist evergreen forests and evergreen montane forests in the arc of higher hills to the west, north, and east, merging in the far north with temperate oak and subalpine conifer forests and ultimately fir, birch, rhododendron, and other subalpine vegetation.
A stated goal of the 1995 Forest Policy is to "strengthen wildlife management through the establishment of a network of national parks, wildlife reserves, and sanctuaries." The policy includes provisions to expand the protected area system first to 5 percent, and ultimately to 10 percent, of the land area, although no time frame is provided.
