Released at a time when the icon was largely unknown outside his home country, the album offers 16 English translations.
It is the seamless way the songs on the eponymously titled 311 combine the band's influences into a potent blend of rap, funk, and rock that renders this album a cut above those of their competitors.
These riff-heavy and radio-ready songs are underscored by a tight drum sound (often with a piccolo snare), the scratching of turntables, and the...

 Soul Coughing Album Reviews
Irresistible Bliss (Warner Brothers ‘96) Rating: A- After a debut album as original as Ruby Vroom, Irresistible Bliss was bound to seem less impressive to some people, but the songs here are of a similarly high quality, though again it takes some time to fully assimilate them.
After Irresistible Bliss, Mike Doughty recorded a solo album, Skittish, which wasn't released until 2000 and even then only through his Web site (www.superspecialquestions.com), though it was "officially" released attached to his subsequent EP, Rockity Roll, in 2004 (adding five bonus tracks).
I don't know why this album wasn't better received when it first appeared, for it's arguably the best of the band's albums, though all 3 are of a comparatively high quality.

This album, their second, is possibly their best...though it's tough to say.
Irresistible Bliss features a broader range of styles and sounds; and, while not as groove-oriented, the songs seem to show the band coming into itself.

The Deadstring Brothers hail from Detroit, home to the sound of loud and lavish rock, and while the debut album from this five piece could hardly be described as fey or wistful, it’s still got a more subdued and layered feel to it than the output of many of their geographical counterparts.
However this earlier album, released in 1966, is as much a part of his legacy as his later work.
The album finishes with what was almost an afterthought, a recording of Yoko Ono’s “Have You Seen a Horizon Lately,” apparently recorded by McLean alone himself, but it’s a good sign that the talent and embodiement of what makes up the band is obviously still there.

The Harvard Crimson :: Arts :: Coughing Bears: Fracturing the Narrative and Other Misadventures
Their second album, Irresistible Bliss, released in 1996, lost some of the momentum of Ruby Vroom (primarily because of the large number of bitter love ballads), although Soul Coughing found themselves a few steps closer to fame due mostly to the success of the upbeat, radio-friendly tune, "Super Bon Bon."
From the opening of the album, it is clear that the beats will be the most prominent and experimental aspect of the album.
Soul Coughing finally take full advantage of overdubbing techniques they hesitantly used on their two previous albums to push their music into a realm where electronica, funk, distorted double-voiced lyrics, whistles, duck quacks, heavy bass, strings, weird speakers, guitars and classical piano merge into a miraculous synthesis of noise, beats and poetry.

Among the album’s many highlights are opening track “Holding Back The Year,” the drum-machine driven “Home,” and “If I Could.” Aside from being a great lyricist, Barlow seems to have a knack for coming up with sing-along melodies that will surely find their way into your head after a few spins of Emoh.
The album closes with “The Ballad of Daykitty,” a song that recalls the old children’s song “The Cat Came Back.” The song embodies all that is great about Lou Barlow; his knack for melody, witty lyrics, and gentle musical style.
Most of the album’s fourteen tracks consist of mid-tempo, repetitive beats and breaks that serve as a foundation for lyrics that promise that the pair has the best game in town, but ultimately fail to deliver the goods.

Moreover, they built a reputation as an excellent live act, thanks to a jazz aesthetic that kept their concert performances fresh and spontaneous (not to mention a liberal policy on fans trading tapes).
Soul Coughing issued their third album, El Oso ("the bear") in 1998, and received their greatest mainstream exposure with the leadoff single "Circles," a good-sized hit on alternative radio.
He also played a series of shows behind his solo acoustic album, Skittish, which had been completed in 1995 but never officially released until Doughty decided to circumvent Napster and sell the album from his own website.

The album was spearheaded by a handful of excellent singles (“Stutter,” “Line Up,” “Connection,” “Waking Up”), but the album is crammed with first-class tracks, several of which could have been used as singles as well.
The album’s fourth and last (?) single was “Waking Up,” perhaps the most retro-ish new wave-track on the album, one that takes you back to the heyday of bands such as Magazine and Echo and The Bunnymen.
However, despite these details, Elastica is still an album that seems to rush by in 20 minutes, thanks to the excellent song sequencing (and 16 songs in 40 minutes isn’t bad either), loads of memorable hooks, melodies, lyrics and (gotta admit it) the irresistible sexiness of Justine Frischmann’s delivery and playing.

The album's lone guest is Rachel Benbow Murdy, band founder Mike Doughty's ex-girlfriend, who supplies a vocal on "Janine." Doughty had Murdy go out to a payphone in Sheridan Square in New York and improvise a long, meandering song into their answering machine.
Recorded a year before the Ruby sessions, Doughty and bass player Sebastian Steinberg recorded the tune at the avant-garde jazz club The Knitting Factory during the daytime, when the club was closed, with club soundperson James McLean.
The album was recorded at Sunset Sound Factory in Hollywood, Blake and Froom's usual haunt--a storage room near the studio's lounge was filled with vintage keyboards and road cases filled with toys--whistles, baby rattles, children's toy xylophones.
