  Irulas
One surmise is that it could have been derived from Tamil word, Irul either implying the dark complexion of the Irulas or their being constantly spotted by villagers in the ancient past as distant silhouettes in the forests.
Anthropological literature says that Irulas belong to the Negrito (or Negroid) race, which is one of the six main ethnic groups that add to the racial mosaic of India.
Irulas as a tribe are traditional snake and rat catchers.

Most relief agencies focused their immediate disaster response on the coastal communities and showed little regard for the Irulas and other B.C. tribes, who could not prove they owned the land they lived on and had little means of income.
In the village schoolhouse, trained teachers work with Irula children, helping them to draw their recollections of the tsunami, to talk about the things or people they miss, and to focus on a future world that is better than the one they live in today.

However, not many are aware of the Irula community's ability to identify various medicinal plants and prepare cures for several ailments.
At a recently conducted exhibition, `Irula and their medicinal plants for a healthy life,' organised by Nature Quest at Book Point Auditorium, over 60 medicinal plants with their botanical names and the diseases they can cure were displayed.

When snake catching was banned in India in the 1970s, the Irula, traditional hunters and gatherers who depended on snake catching for a living, found themselves caught in the politics of conservation.
Their solution was to form the Irula Snake Catcher Cooperative in 1982 to organize and market their specialized knowledge.
The Irula are quick to realize they have the means to make their own cooperative work and grow.
