Irvin Kershner (born April 29, 1923 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), is an American director and sometimes actor.
Post-Empire, "Kersh" has also directed several episodes of the television series, seaQuest DSV, and he made his debut as an actor in the controversial 1988 Martin Scorsese film, The Last Temptation of Christ, playing Zebedee, the father of the apostles James and John.
Currently, Irvin Kershner is a faculty member at the Master of Professional Writing Program at the University of Southern California.

He turned to television in the 1950s, directing and photographing a series of documentaries called "Confidential File." Kershner was one of the directors given his first break by producer Roger Corman, for whom he shot Stakeout on Dope Street (1958).
The main theme that runs through many of Kershner's films is social alienation and human weaknesses - although his biggest commercial success was the sci-fi blockbuster Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980).
Kershner achieved his greatest popular success with The Empire Strikes Back (1980), the second installment of the Star Wars series that many critics felt surpassed the original.

Boone, Irvin Kershner is not the sole reason ESB is as good as it is. The fact is Kershner's resume ranges from mediocre to awful.
Irvin Kershner is not a good director at all and he's certainly not a better director than Lucas.
Irvin is difficult to explain - see "A man called Horse" for another example of his directing abilities(I certainly hope you have seen Irvin's other films other than Robo2 before saying he is a "mediocre to awful" director...).

For the first time hires a director: Irvin Kershner, who at the time was coming off of films like Return of a Man Called Horse and The Eyes of Laura Mars.
Kershner and Lucas's longtime producer, Gary Kurtz (the guy in photos with the Amish beard), basically shoot the movie in England while Lucas oversees and executive produces from San Francisco (this is from memory, I might have the facts a bit off).
Kershner goes over budget and schedule, due to all the problems in such a pioneering effects movie, and to my eyes, he does something miraculous: actually directs the movie.

There's something of a history between myself and this movie, being that it was the first flick I ever saw, so naturally I have kind of a subconscious affection for it, not least that it's part of the Star Wars trilogy, which to me are the most beautiful and wondrous films ever made.
With this, Kershner gives us a full pallet of wonderful environments for us to take in, from the sterile and harsh ice planet of Hoth to the ragged and dangerous asteroid field to the warm clouds of Bespin.
Kershner doesn't disappoint us, with the room immediately illuminating, and Vader's menacing rhythmic heavy breathing erupting from every speaker.

The director (irvin kershener) seems to have really concentrated on making the 'voyueristic' scenes as they are the best in the film.
Kershner (a severly underated director, in my book) was brought onto the project fairly late, and though it helped his name in Hollywood, wasn't very happy with the project either.
Then someone came up with the "bright" idea of making the killer someone the heroine is close to, possibly her lover, and Carpenter left in disgust.

Director Irvin Kershner was already a successful director in the mid-1960’s when the USC Cinema graduate went back to his alma mater to teach.
Since one of his students was George Lucas, it was only natural that ten years later, Lucas turned to his former teacher to take on the task of directing one of the most anticipated (and successful) movie sequels of all time.
The print BTW was the 1997 SE one we got the old crappy looking Emperor, I wish it had been a new one because the print sometimes looked blured and grainy, also during this QandA we never get trailers just the movie right away but tonight we got one, and of course was ROTS.

Irvin also disagreed with Lucas, he had to fight to keep the infamous "I love you...
He gave Kasdan the story to flesh out, and Irvin the sort of scheme he had in mind, but in post-production it was all Lucas.

Also Irvin said that Stanley Kubrick, burned down a set before they started filming ESB which didn't helped him at all, since he was already short on sets.

While there are chapter stops and English subtitles-which they'd have to do anyway for the deaf and hard of hearing-there are no subtitles in any other language, there's no original trailer for the film, no filmographies, and no commentary tracks.
This latter omission is puzzling considering the director Irvin Kershner is still with us, as are the film's two stars (George Segal and Eva Marie Saint) and its legendary cinematographer, Gordon (THE GODFATHER, MANHATTAN) Willis.
Considering this was Willis's first film, and the film that many critics consider to represent Kershner, Segal, and Saint's BEST work--Pauline Kael called Saint's performance "stunning"--I can't imagine the talent wouldn't have been interested in getting together to discuss the film and help bolster its profile.

Part of the problem is the script itself, but Irvin Kershner's flat direction and the generally downbeat performances don't help.
As Irvin Kershner states in his commentary "look at this guy, he's in the inner circle, and he's sloppily dressed, and his hair's a mess..."
Then the Director's Commentary is wonderful~~~Irvin Kershner talks to you, not AT YOU, just as if you were sitting with him in a living room, relaxing, and he gives you a play by play on the whole movie!!!

The only faults are a couple minor quirks in the script-- like you can tell whodunit almost right away.
Irvin Kirschner, the very intelligent director who guided this (as well as "Empire Strikes Back", etc..), provides a non-stop commentary track which is interesting.
My main complaint with the DVD: as a double-sided disc, you have the option of watching it on the square "full screen" shaped for TV, or the ALLEGED widescreen--- but the widescreen here is actually the square TV-version only with the 'heads and feet' cut-off in letterbox style...
