Topic: Irving Chernev

In the News (Mon 4 Jun 12)

 [No title]
To those who do not know Irving Chernev, who haven't read his work, the foregoing must appear as highly exaggerated, overblown nonsense those who are familiar with his personality and a good number of his widely-known, much admired books might allow that I understated his relationship to our game.
Chernev was born in czarist Russia in the first month of the 20th century.
Chernev was an aesthete, a lover, and fully realized that the more one understood of art, the more one could see and experience the beautiful, then the more deep, abiding pleasure and joy was to be had.

Irving Chernev - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Irving Chernev (1900-1981) was a prolific Russian-American chess author.
Chernev's deep love for the game is obvious to any reader of his books.
Chernev died in his beloved San Francisco in 1981.

 Irving Chernev Great Chess Writer
Chernev in San Francisco, a city which he rarely left and loved almost as much as chess.
Irving Chernev is one of the best beginning chess book writers of all time.
Chernev decided to stop playing chess later in his life, choosing to enjoy chess as an observer and a writer.

 Logical Chess
Batsford's new edition of Logical Chess: Move by Move, written in 1957 by Irving Chernev, is a collection of 33 games with a famous player on at least one side of the board.
Chernev's idea was to "explain" every move of every game, mostly with a paragraph or more of prose, and sometimes (but not often) with supporting analysis.
This is very true of Chernev's games, which are almost all examples of miserable defense by the loser, or of utter lack of understanding (by modern standards).

 Chernev chess
To those who do not know Irving Chernev, who haven’t read his work, the foregoing must appear as highly exaggerated, overblown nonsense – those who are familiar with his personality and a good number of his widely-known, much admired books might allow that I understated his relationship to our game.
But here the analogy ends, for Chernev was not possessive, he couldn’t, wouldn’t be jealous – he wanted to share this passion with the world.
There are, no doubt, a jaded few who have "outgrown" Chernev, who have gone on to more serious fare and relegate his bright, exuberant books to their "naïve" chess past, to the near-forgotten days when chess was more fun than work.

Amazon.ca: Capablanca's Best Chess Endings: Books: Irving Chernev   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Chernev is a master writer at illuminating the logic behind moves and helping the reader understand those reasons.
Chernev's annotations are lucid and instructive but perhaps a little too simplistic at times.
Chernev also falls into hero-worship in places, but he quite defensibly regarded Capa as the greatest player of all time.

Amazon.co.uk: Logical Chess Move by Move (Batsford Chess Book): Books: Irving Chernev   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Chernev explains the thoughts of the masters and explains key concepts with a clarity that no other writer has ever equalled.
Echoing the sentiments of all those who have already written in support of Chernev's book, this is indeed an essential book for anyone whose passion for the game of chess has developed beyond a casual understanding of the tactics of the game, towards an understanding of strategy.
For those who are looking for books for children, Chernev is an eloquent writer who may stretch a child's volcabulary as much as their chess knowledge, without being unduly taxing.

The chess games of Irving Chernev
Chernev was a very active master for a time.
: Irving Chernev is a man for whom I have alot of respect.
Sure their style was a bit pedantic and prescriptive, but they made it feel like when you played the game you were engaged in a noble struggle for truth and justice.

Amazon.ca: Combinations : The Heart of Chess: Books: Irving Chernev   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Chernev's classic is not simply a collection of combinations for drilling yourself on pins, forks, smothered mates, and so on - although there are plenty of combinations (300+) for that - it shows how the great players used them in their games.
I like how Chernev uses extended game fragments and his own enthusiastic commentary to explain the combinations.
I have several tactics books and I enjoyed Chernev's less common approach to combinations: most books just give the position as though it just "appeared" out of the blue to settle the game.

Chessville Reviews - 50 Essential Chess Lessons (A Modern Look at 50 Immensely Instructive Chess Battles) - by Steve ...
While chess authors like Irving Chernev, I.A. Horowitz, and Fred Reinfeld were not the strongest players in their day (although of the three, Horowitz was by far the strongest, having won the US championship three times) their chess books have always been among my favorites.
Chernev focused not on variations, but on clear and concise explanations using words that seemed to help dispel some of the mystery that surrounds chess in the mind of the beginner.
Like Chernev, Giddens’ comments are light on variations and heavy on verbal explanations, which is just what the class player is hungry for.

Chernev does give variations on how to win many variations, but there are times when it appears that the opponent is not playing the best possible line.
Chernev gives you several endgames which demonstrate a technique, but he never specifically says "This position contains these key points which will lead us to use this particular technique".
You are basically given a winning position and then Chernev outlines how to win with the position.

 Logical Chess: Move by Move
For those who didn’t grow up in the era of descriptive notation, Irving Chernev wrote books that mostly appealed to the mainstream player.
The author does a great job of connecting with the reader – one feels that they really are inside the head of the players and that Chernev is explaining what they were thinking while deciding upon their moves.
While not a world-class player, Chernev was a prolific writer, and that combination serves the reader well in this book.

Readers will find their technique improving with each lesson as Irving Chernev dissects winning strategies, comments on alternate tactics and marvels at the finesse of winning play, noting at the end of his Introduction: "I might just as well have called this collection The Most Beautiful Games of Chess Ever Played."

Other possibilities: "The Art of the Middle Game" by Keres and Kotov, "How to Reassess Your Chess" and "The Amateur's Mind" by Jeremy Silman, and "The Most Instructive Games of Chess Ever Played" by Chernev.
But I would recommend "Logical Chess" most of all -- it gives one of the best groundings in chess fundamentals of any book I know, especially if you have not read any other books on the middle game.
I fully agree with you on "Logical chess move by move" by Chernev, which is really good, but "My system" by Nimzowitsch, although not only about middle game, is a great classic, and a pleasure to read.
