  Irving Rapper, director, 101
Known as a director of romantic melodramas referred to as ''women's pictures,'' Rapper worked with such performers as Fredric March, Kirk Douglas, Eve Arden, Claude Rains, and Ronald Reagan, an actor he later said he regretted casting.
Overall, the London-born filmmaker's most successful body of work is comprised of the nine films Rapper made while under contract with Warner Bros., where he started out in 1936 as a dialogue coach.
Other biopics directed by Rapper included ``The Adventures of Mark Twain'' (1944), ``Pontius Pilate'' (1962) -- one of two biblical films he directed in Italy during the 1960s -- and his very last film, the 1978 flop ``Born Again,'' about convicted Watergate conspirator and former Nixon aide Charles Colson.

BBC - collective - Now, Voyager [Irving Rapper, 1942]
It’s the story of a woman (played by Bette Davis) who suffers a mental breakdown as a result of a claustrophobic existence under the regime of an extraordinarily domineering mother, but who finds love and a new found confidence and freedom through the love of a married man. What’s more it’s a remarkably good film.
There’s a real economy and richness of storytelling (especially in the first quarter) which is expertly handled by director Irving Rapper, and which helps gives the whole tone and feel of the piece an underlying sophistication.
It may sit easily within the melodrama category, but it displays a subtlety and elegance of characterisation which the genre often lacks.

Let's face it - this 1942 Warner Bros film classic is a hoot.
Directed by journeyman studio veteran Irving Rapper, it's an unabashed, only-in-Hollywood soap opera with Bette Davis at the peak of her popularity as she evolves from a distraught, overweight spinster to a glamorous Boston society social maven in about ten minutes.
Probably to Tom Cruise's horror, it's also a big valentine to the positive effects of psychoanalysis, a "new" science which must have been viewed with a great deal of skepticism at the time.
