  Irving Segal
Segal was born in the Bronx on Sept. 13, 1918.
Segal was a visiting professor at several universities worldwide including Columbia University, La Sorbonne, Lund University, University of Pisa, Aarhus University, College de France, Institute of Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, Copenhagen and the University of Moscow.
Professor Segal is survived by his wife Dr. Martha Segal of Lexington; their six-year-old daughter daughter, Miriam, of Lexington; three children from an earlier marriage, William of Bethesda, Md., Andrew of Espinola, N.M., and Karen of New York City; and four grandchildren.

ERRORS in the CHRONOMETRIC COSMOLOGY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Segal - "The cosmic background radiation is, of course, not uniquely indicative of a Big Bang, but a Planck law for the background photons is implied by any temporally homogeneous theory in which the energy is modelled, as usual, by the infinitesimal time evolution generator.
Segal has since introduced a new statistical technique that he calls ROBUST, but since the original claim of a quadratic redshift-distance law was due to a biased statistical technique, any method that agrees with the original biased analysis is also flawed.
Segal is wrong on the CMB, wrong on the source counts, and wrong on the redshift-magnitude law.

 Segal Conformal Physics and GraviPhotons
As to Astrophysical Black Hole and Neutron Star Regions, Segal did not discuss them in his work, which was oriented primarily to cosmology (and some elementary particle theory), but not so much to structures as large as planets and stars and smaller than the universe as a whole.
Segal spent much time and effort on a quadratic cosmological redshift that he claimed was implicit in the physics of the Conformal Group.
Segal used to say the dynamics of distant stars was governed by the Einstein Hamiltonian but we saw them from the Minkowski viewpoint.

I met Irving Segal in 1982 shortly after I came to MIT in order to get my Ph.D. in mathematics.
Segal's office was a cozy, lived-in place, cluttered with decades of accumulated papers.
In his earlier years Segal's tendency towards radicalism served him well.

 Segal Conformal Physics and GraviPhotons
Irving Ezra Segal used the geometry of the Conformal Group SU(2,2) = Spin(2,4) in his Physics Theory.
The Presentations of the 15 Infinitesimal Causal Symmetries of Segal's Conformal SpaceTime are given in the following Table 1.
At this point, I will depart from the program of Segal and introduce some of my own ideas, so that any errors that appear in what follows are more likely attributable to me than to Segal.

From what I can >tell, their job description now reads: "Use mathematical weaponry/magic to >obtain physical insights." This, if you like, is the Witten school of >mathematical physics.
So I wound up going to grad school at MIT, in part because I liked C*-algebras and Irving Segal, the inventor of C*-algebras, taught there.
All of this was good old-fashioned mathematical physics in the above sense: lots of analysis, a little bit of geometry and algebra, with an emphasis on making existing stuff more rigorous.

I was the research associate of Irving Segal at MIT from Sept 1965 to Feb. or so of 1966.
My second son was born during this stay.
I did not have the chance to work closely with Segal, since he had at that time a research contract with a Canadian university, (Carlton, I think) which entailed his taking a plane to Canada each Thurs.

Abrams said the current situation poses a delicate assessment of national and personal security versus principles of civil liberties.
In this year’s Irving R. Segal Lecture in Trial Advocacy, Abrams said he believes the imminent danger from al-Qaeda justifies holding “enemy combatants” without a right to counsel, even though no criminal charges have been filed against them.
Abrams, a partner at Cahill, Gordon & Reindel in New York, also said he supports increased surveillance and monitoring of suspected terrorists, including photographing and fingerprinting students or businesspeople from Arab countries.
