With agriculture consisting of 80% of Irwin County's tax base, a group of concerned leaders realized that it was imperative to make every effort possible to: 1) sustain current farmers, 2) attract young people to the ag industry, and 3) promote economic growth by creating jobs and revenue for our region.
To address this issue a regional advisory committee was formed consisting of farmers, county agents, specialists, elected officials including both area School Boards and County Commission Boards, as well as school administrators, local businesses, researchers, agricultural company representatives, and Chamber of Commerce representatives as well as concerned citizens and community leaders.
Twenty-five acres have been committed to this project for 2002 and negotiations are underway to purchase 90 acres adjacent to the Irwin County High School.
