Don Isaac ben Judah or Yitzchak ben Yehuda Abravanel (Hebrew: יצחק בן יהודה אברבנאל) was a Jewish statesman, philosopher, Bible commentator, and financier.
The Abravanel family (also Abarbanel and Abrabanel) is one of the oldest and most distinguished Jewish Iberian families; they trace their origin from the biblical King David.
It is said also that Ferdinand hesitated, but was prevented from accepting the offer by Torquemada, the grand inquisitor, who dashed into the royal presence and, throwing a crucifix down before the king and queen, asked whether, like Judas, they would betray their Lord for money.

In the field of Biblical exegesis, Abrabanel has the merit of having anticipated much of what has been advanced as new by modern investigators, and of having considered systematically not only the letter of the sacred text, but also the persons of its authors, their aim and surroundings.

On the death of Alphonso in 1481, his counsellors and favorites were harshly treated by his successor John, and Abrabanel was compelled to flee to Spain, where he held for eight years (1484-1492) the post of a minister of state under Ferdinand and Isabella.
Abrabanel often quotes Christian authorities, though he opposed Christian exegesis of Messianic passages.
He was one of the first to see that for Biblical exegesis it was necessary to reconstruct the social environment of olden times, and he skilfully applied his practical knowledge of statecraft to the elucidation of the books of Samuel and Kings.

Abrabanel's magnum opus, the Dialoghi d'amore (“Dialogues of Love”) belongs to the genre of the trattato d'amore (“treatise on love”) that was intimately connected to both the Renaissance and the development of the Italian vernacular.
Despite his favorable relationship with them, Isaac was unable to influence them to rescind their famous edict of expulsion – calling on all Jews who refused to convert to Christianity – to depart from the Iberian Peninsula.
Abrabanel's emphasis, like that of many of his Renaissance contemporaries, on aesthetics and the phenomenal world would eventually become an important dimension of 16th- and 17th -century natural philosophy.
