Born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1726 Barre took part in the Battle of Quebec in 1759 and, along with John Goldsbury, was one of the earliest pioneers of a com-munity now known as Barre.
Barre was at the side of Gen. James Wolfe on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec, and was a prominent advocate of the colonists from his seat in Parliament, where he served for 30 years.
During the debate, Col. Barre distinguished himself by delivering an exceptional speech opposing the Stamp Act, in which he referred to Americans as "the Sons of Liberty!" When the news of Barre's speech reached the colonists, his words were applauded, reprinted, and broadcast throughout the land.
