ISAAC BUTT (1813-1879), Irish lawyer and Nationalist leader, was born at Glenfin, Donegal, in 1813, his father being the Episcopalian rector of Stranorlar.
On this platform he was elected in 1871 for Limerick, and found himself at the head of an Irish Home Rule party of fifty-seven members.
But it was an ill-assorted union, and Butt soon found that he had little or no control over his more aggressive followers.

Isaac Butt, regarded as the founder of the Home Rule Movement in Ireland, was born in Glenfin, on the 6th of September, 1813, the only son of a Protestant rector.
In 1852 Butt was elected to Westminster as Tory MP for both Harwich and Youghal in County Cork, a seat he held until 1865.
Butt was in poor spirits and was returning to Ireland from Buxton in Derbyshire, a spa, whose mineral waters were taken for rheumatic diseases and other complaints.

As a politician, Butt was largely ineffective - his alcoholism meant he was frequently absent from Parliament, attempting to work his drinking debts off.
In 1877, Butt was replaced as head of the Home Rule Confederation of Great Britain by Charles Stewart Parnell, under whom the Home Rule Party would become a massive force in Irish politics.

The Irish Republican Brotherhood, grateful to Butt for his work in defending Fenian prisoners and in the Amnesty Association, were prepared in the beginning to co-operate with Home Rulers though their objective was total separation from Britain and the establishment of an Irish republic.
Butt’s policy of Home Rule caught the imagination of the people but his party’s pursuit of that policy in the 1870s was not successful for many reasons.
Butt’s successor as leader, Charles Stewart Parnell, disciplined and organised the party into an impressive political machine that had widespread support in Ireland and great success at the polls.

Born in the Glebe in Glenfin in 1813, Isaac Butt was the son of a church of Ireland clergyman.
Along with housing a detailed display of Issac Butt's own life, the centre is at present engaged in researching and compiling a complete history of the Glenfin parish and it's immediate area.
