Born in Rouen, he moved to London in 1568 with his Huguenot parents Peter and Epiphany Oliver to escape the Alvan religious persecution in France.
He then studied miniature painting under Nicholas Hilliard; and developed a naturalistic style, which was largely influenced by Italian and Flemish art.
Susannah was the daughter of Troilus de Critz, a goldsmith from Antwerp, and close relative of John de Critz, the Queen's Serjeant-Painter.

A Huguenot refugee from France, Isaac Oliver came to England with his family when he was a child.
Oliver was not, it seems, favoured by Elizabeth I but after her death he was appointed miniaturist to Anne of Denmark, and later to Henry, Prince of Wales, James I's elder son.
This magnificent miniature is one of two self-portraits by Oliver and once belonged to Horace Walpole, who said of it, 'The art of the master and the imitation of nature are so great in it that the largest magnifying-glass only calls out new beauties'.

Isaac Oliver Best was born January 4, 1841, in Oswegatchie, St. Lawrence County, N.Y., the fifth child and fourth son of John M. and Elizabeth Best, English immigrants who had settled in St. Lawrence County in 1831 or 1832.
Isaac joined his regiment at Bakersville, Md., shortly after the Battle of Antietam and served with it during the campaign against Fredericksburg in December, 1862, the "Mud March" of January, 1863 and at Chancellorsville in May, 1863, only a few days before the two year men were formally mustered out of the service.
The Isaac Best manuscripts were prepared in the 1880s or 1890s for the veterans organizations of the 16th and 121st New York Infantry Regiments.

English miniature painter, the eldest son of Isaac Oliver, probably by his first wife; and to him Isaac Oliver left his finished and unfinished drawings, with the hope that he would live to exercise the art of his father.
A great many of Oliver's works were purchased by Charles II from his widow; several of his drawings are in existence, and a leaf from his pocket-book in the collection of the Earl of Derby.
His most important work is the group of the three grandsons of the 1st Viscount Montacute with their servant, now belonging to the Marquess of Exeter; and there are fine miniatures by him at Welbeck Abbey, Montagu House, Sherborne Castle, Minley Manor, Belvoir Castle and in the private collection of the Queen of Holland.
