  Ostade - LoveToKnow 1911
Adrian Ostade (1610-1685), the eldest of Jan Hendricx's sons, was born and died at Haarlem.
Between Teniers and Ostade the contrast lies in the different condition of the agricultural classes of Brabant and Holland, and the atmosphere and dwellings that were peculiar to each region.
Isaac Ostade (1621-1649) was born in Haarlem, and began his studies under Adrian, with whom he remained till 1641, when he started on his own account.

Isaac van Ostade - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Isaac van Ostade (1621 - October 16, 1649) was born in Haarlem, and began his studies under his brother, Adriaen, with whom he remained till 1641, when he started his own practice.
Isaac's progress in his new path was greatly facilitated by his previous experience as a figure painter; and, although he now selected his subjects either from village high streets or frozen canals, he gave fresh life to the scenes by depicting animated groups of people with a refined and searching study of picturesque contrasts.
The first manifestation of Isaacs surrender of Adrian's style is apparent in 1644 when the skating and sledging scenes were executed which we see in the Lacaze collection and the galleries of the Hermitage, Antwerp and Lille.

Adriaen van Ostade - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ostade was the contemporary of David Teniers the Younger and Adrian Brouwer.
During the first years of his career, Ostade tended toward the same exaggeration and frolic as his comrade, though he is distinguished from his rival by a more general use of light and shade, especially a greater concentration of light on a small surface in contrast with a broad expanse of gloom.
Ostade was more at home in a similar effect applied to the commonplace incident of the Slaughtering of a Pig, one of the masterpieces of 1643, and once in the Gsell collection.

His older brother Adriaen van Ostade trained him, but his early landscape studies suggest instruction by a landscape painter, possibly Salomon van Ruysdael, who sued Adriaen in 1640 for "sums due for board and tuition." Isack van Ostade's earliest dated picture is inscribed 1639.
All their world is within the confines of this one room which the artist has painted in a variety of browns and yellows, with which he has created a rather mysterious atmosphere.

Low life in the Golden Age - Rijksmuseum Amsterdam - National Museum for Art and History
Works by famous 17th-century artists such as Isaac and Adriaen van Ostade, Jan Steen and Pieter Xavery feature scenes of country life.
One of the highlights of 'Low life in the Golden Age' is Jan Steen's 'Interior of an inn', known as 'Two kinds of games', which shows simple country folk boozing, partying and quarrelling.
The exhibition also shows how these satirical scenes of rural abandon came to be paralleled in the mid-17th century by a more positive, pastoral view of country life, as in the 'Country inn with horse and wagon' by Isaac van Ostade and Cornelis Dusart's 'Country inn'.

It was a winter-scene, by Adrian van de Velde, or by Isaac van Ostade.
Sebastian van Storck, confessedly the most graceful performer in all that skating multitude, moving in endless maze over the vast surface of the frozen water-meadow, liked best this season of the year for its expression of a perfect impassivity, or at least of a perfect repose.
This mixed expression charmed the eye of Isaac van Ostade, who had painted his portrait from a sketch taken at one of those skating parties, with his plume of squirrel’s tail and fur muff, in all the modest pleasantness of boyhood.

Genre painting - MalibuMountainWiki   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Because of their familiar and sentimental subject matter, genre paintings have often proven popular with the bourgeoisie, or middle class.
Genre paintings like those by Adriaen and Isaac van Ostade, Tenier, Cuyp, Johannes Vermeer and Pieter De Hooch became popular in the Netherlands in the 17th century.
These works inspired eighteenth-century French painters who also sought to depict everyday life, whether through careful realism in the works of Chardin or the romanticized paintings of Watteau.
