	Isaaq - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The Isaaq (Somali language: Reer Sheik Isaxaaq; Arabic: Is-haq binu Ahmed) is one of the main Somali clans, comprising about 22% of the population of Somalia.
		The three major cities of Somaliland - Hargeisa, Burao and Berbera - have populations that are predominantly Isaaq.
		Isaaq members trace their lineage to Sheikh Ishak binu Ahmed and they subdivide into the following subclans:

		The Isaaq clans of northwestern Somalia also resented what they perceived as their inadequate representation in Siad Barre's government.
		This disaffection crystallized in 1981 when Isaaq dissidents living in London formed the Somali National Movement (SNM) with the aim of toppling the Siad Barre regime.
		In April 1981, a group of Isaaq emigrés living in London formed the Somali National Movement (SNM), which subsequently became the strongest of Somalia's various insurgent movements.

		As I have mentioned in a previous article, there is very little difference among the Isaaq secessionists between the man in the street and those presumably educated ones when it comes to articulating their grievances and their justifications for their secession.
		While their strong feelings concerning the crimes committed by the former military regime against the Isaaqs are understandable, it is another thing to vent their bitterness in an abusive manner on the rest of the Somali people, who themselves had suffered under that regime in one way or another.

		The driving forces, for the secession ideology among the Isaaq, are led by a handful of zealots, while the rest of the population favor remaining with the republic, provided that federalism based on a fair system of power sharing and wealth distribution is established.

		The Majeerteen clan, along with certain clans of the Hawiye and Isaaq clan-families, had played a significant role in national politics before the 1969 military coup, and individual Majeerteen held important positions in the bureaucracy and the military.
