Isabel, however, had no difficulty in recognizing him and the fl steed on which he sat, and which champed the bit and foamed beneath his rein.
Upon looking up, his eyes met those of the fair Isabel; and as he returned to her the glove on the point of his lance, and she bowed her thanks, he felt that she was not insensible to his regard for he.
His object in so doing was to prevent his father, the earl, from noticing Isabel; for he well knew the haughtiness of his temper, and his zeal for the dignity of his order, and his inflexible ambition to ally his son to the heiress of some noble house or other.

When you look back on Lean's movies, you tend to think first in terms of what used to be called production values, a vague term that implies the collaboration between the director and his team of visual artists -- the cinematographer, the production and costume designers, and the editor.
It helps to know that Lean was raised by a proper Quaker mother, whose taste didn't run to vulgarities like movies, and a father whose emotional availability was erratic at best (his parents finally separated), and that all his life his friends observed an unresolvable duality in him.
It was like an amputation." And Lean's own words confirm her view: on relationships, he is quoted as saying, "You see, you must cut.

Isabel of Spain - a very holy Catholic queen who was virtuous and defended Spain and the interests of Christendom
Three years after the birth of the Princess Isabel, she brought forth her son, Alfonso; and while he was still in the womb, she accomplished her desire.
Isabel remembered her lying in bed, ill; in white mourning garments, weeping for the King; in the chapel, kneeling in reverence before the uplifted Host.
From singing the Cancioneros that had been so dear to her father, Isabel evoked from the past the heroic story of her crusading ancestors; and from the chronicles of her own time, there unrolled before her keen intelligence and strong imagination a picture of the fascinating and terrifying world into which she had been born.

The two frequently fought with each other; Lean had adapted Guinness's stage version of Great Expectations for the screen for his second film, and thus felt responsible for Guinness's screen career; Guinness resented this assertion immensely.
This, along with Guinness's perfectionism and difficult personality and what he perceived as Lean's authoritarian attitude while shooting a film, caused the two to quarrel on virtually all of their films together.

ISABEL BISHOP 1902   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Isabel Bishop has been described by the painter R. Kitaj as "the best female artist America produced (aside from Cassatt)." Like Mary Cassatt, Bishop's greatest creative strength was an extraordinary drawing ability.
Though successfully harmonized, her color is characteristically muted and subordinate to effects of luminosity, expressed in her later work as a kind of flickering syncopation suggesting the complex motion of the city.
Bishop's image has replaced the sinister smirk of the fatal woman or the sensual come-hither of the pin-up model and odalisque with the more authentic, less dramatic miracle of daily laughter: the face of an ordinary, plump woman, spontaneously illuminated by a smile.
