 Venus: Isabelle Huppert
Isabelle Huppert is one of France’s finest actresses, and though she appears to look very plain, there is wryness and dark sensuality behind her knowing stare.
Huppert stood in one spot on a bare stage for an hour and a half, wearing a blue shirt and leather pants, looking open and stripped, her face bearing little makeup underneath the hot spotlights.
The work is so emotionally exhausting that it has caused Huppert to shake onstage throughout the show and her eyes to well up with tears, exposing a vulnerability that’s a far cry from her usual roles as detached seductresses and ravaged mothers.

Isabelle in the bath - Salon
As I sketched last week in my outline of Michael Haneke's film "The Piano Teacher," I wondered over the precise nature of actress Isabelle Huppert's beauty in the lead role, and whether her masochistic character was happy or unhappy.
No, it's not Huppert's blood, I'm sure; and Erika is what you might call a bloodless creation -- though not necessarily "anemic." The blood is just red, there in the bath, or poured in by some out-of-sight props person so that it may be discovered eventually, as evidence of self-inflicted damage.
Huppert won the acting prize at Cannes for "The Piano Teacher," and there was a lot of talk about how brave the performance was.

Huppert conveys exasperation, passion, and self-destruction in equal measure, yet she barely alters her passive, blank expression; her performance is too cold to ignite the resonant themes of Flaubert's novel.
Isabelle Huppert is superb as the central character, Emma, a prosperous farmer's daughter, who marries a doctor, Charles Bovary (Jean Francois Balmer).
Huppert does not show enough passion and emotion for my taste though, the original character is consumed by suffering and desperately stabs at whatever form of relief comes her way, but Huppert doesn't quite get any depth out of this performance.

The actress found herself in the midst of controversy in 1979 when the insistence by Michael Cimino to cast her as the female lead in "Heaven's Gate" was one of the earlier uproars between the director and the studio in what proved to be one of the biggest box office disasters in Hollywood history.
In demand internationally, Huppert never wanted to abandon the film industry in her native land, and when she starred in "Story of Women" for Chabrol in 1988, it was hailed as her French "comeback", earning her some of the best reviews of her career.
