Isao Takahata - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Isao Takahata (高畑 勲 Takahata Isao) (born October 29, 1935) is one of the most famous directors of anime, or Japanese animated films.
Takahata has been influenced by Italian neorealism, Jacques Prévert, and French New Wave films during the 1960s.
These expressionistic sequences run counter to Takahata's realism, but are consciously used by the director to unlock the potential of the unreal medium of animation to enhance a character's emotions in a realistic drama.

It was a difficult film to produce with Isao Takahata being forced to remove 30 minutes of the film prior to its completion by Toei.
Also Takahata originally wanted the film to be about the Emishi (the indigenious people of Japan who were persecuted by the Japanese).
Takahata was forced by Toei to change it to another nationality, so the Norse were picked instead.

Anne of Green Gables - film reviews
Takahata's series' would always be the gold standard by which everything would be judged, and his three productions - Heidi in 1974, 3000 Leagues in 1976, and Anne of Green Gables in 1979 - have never been surpassed in television animation.
His tragic death in 1998 shook Takahata deeply, and perhaps this is a major reason for his semi-retirement after My Neighbors the Yamadas in 1999.
Isao Takahata had mastered his realist style by now, but Anne of Green Gables takes great advantage of another of his greatest talents: the flights of fancy.

Takahata, often called the 'animator who does not draw', saw the contradiction of illustrators churning out a world of pristine mountains they had never seen in a cramped, fluorescent-lit office in Tokyo.
Takahata's emphasis on realism was later adopted by Hayao Miyazaki, whose Tonari no Totoro and Mononoke Hime are both grounded in actual locations: the Deer God's Forest in the latter is based on the island ecology of Yakushima, a designated U.N. World Heritage site.
Takahata's announcement that Ghibli's next project would be his adaptation of a syndicated newspaper strip by Hisaichi Ishii puzzled most and left not a few aghast, especially in the wake of Miyazaki's epic-proportion Mononoke Hime and Takahata's selection as one of the recipients of a national medal awarded to artists and cultural figures of note.

Isao Takahata is perhaps less well-known than Miyazaki, but his works are also considered to be anime classics.
Takahata's movies are generally considered to be more serious and introspective than the average Miyazaki movie.
Takahata directed many of the anime that Miyazaki worked on in a lesser capacity, especially during the 60's and 70's, including such shows as Panda Cub (considered the precursor to Totoro) and Heidi: Girl of the Alps.

Isao Takahata is not a name most Americans will recognize.
Omohide Poro Poro best incorporates the traits and skills Takahata developed during the 1970's, when he revolutionized animation in Japan with World Masterpiece Theatre, presenting television renditions of Heidi and Anne of Green Gables, and then in 1982 with his great Goshu the Cellist.
His style is reflective and deeply personal, very much like Ozu, but Takahata's greatest gift, for me at least, is his ability to take us inside the heads of his characters as their imaginations take flight.

 Midnight Eye review: Pompoko (1994)
Unlike Miyazaki, who is an illustrator/animator first and foremost, Takahata is a consummate director: during the process of filmmaking he never once puts brush to paper.
As a result, the look of a Takahata film changes from title to title, and is related to each film's subject and themes, rather than its director's signature style.
Harmony is never an absolute state, Takahata seems to say, and one must change with the times and with the situation in order to make the best out of life.
