Topic: Ischium

  Ornithischian Dinosaurs
All terrestrial animals and even marine animals derived from terrestrial stocks have hip girdles, or pelvises, and all hip girdles are composed of three bones: the ilium, ischium, and pubis.
All ornithischians are united by a pubis pointing backward, running parallel with the ischium.
In the diagram, the pubis is pale orange, the ilium is red, and the ischium is brown.

II. Osteology. 6c. The Bones of the Lower Extremity. 1. The Hip Bone. Gray, Henry. 1918. Anatomy of the Human Body.
The ischium is the lowest and strongest portion of the bone; it proceeds downward from the acetabulum, expands into a large tuberosity, and then, curving forward, forms, with the pubis, a large aperture, the obturator foramen.
The ridges extend downward, and are continuous with similar ridges on the inferior ramus of the ischium; to the external is attached the fascia of Colles, and to the internal the inferior fascia of the urogenital diaphragm.
At birth, the three primary centers are quite separate, the crest, the bottom of the acetabulum, the ischial tuberosity, and the inferior rami of the ischium and pubis being still cartilaginous.

 Reference.com/Encyclopedia/Obturator internus muscle
The obturator internus muscle originates on the medial surface of the obturator membrane, the ischium near the membrane, and the rim of the pubis.
It also arises from the pelvic surface of the obturator membrane except in the posterior part, from the tendinous arch which completes the canal for the passage of the obturator vessels and nerve, and to a slight extent from the obturator fascia, which covers the muscle.
A bursa, narrow and elongated in form, is usually found between the tendon and the capsule of the hip-joint; it occasionally communicates with the bursa between the tendon and the ischium.

It is formed by three separate bones which become fused: the ilium, the ischium, and the pubis.
The ischium forms the smaller, lower, portion which bears the weight of the body while sitting.
The lower of the two segments is called the inferior pubic ramus and it joins with the ischium of the pelvis.

Chapter 12: THE BONES OF THE LOWER LIMB
Each hip bone consists of an ilium, an ischium, and a pubis, all three of which in the adult are fused at the acetabulum to form a single bone.
The body of the ischium presents three surfaces: one facing the thigh (femoral), another related to the ischiorectal fossa (pelvic), and still another (posterior), which is continuous with the gluteal surface of the ilium.
The superior ramus of the pubis extends superolaterally to the acetabulum, where it is fused with the ilium and ischium, and forms about the anterior one fifth of the acetabulum.

inMotion: Fitting for Hip Disarticulation and Hemi-pelvectomy Level Amputations
Plaster is wrapped across pelvis with band under ischium which is molded to fit around ischium to provide a pocket to protect ischium from excessive pressure and to provide stablilty of socket fit.
On this model ischium is marked in red, trim lines are marked in fl and an area for build up to strenghten the hip joint is marked as a rectangle.
It is important to fit the ischium carefully and to adequately cup it to prevent too high a pressure or "hot spot" which could cause tissue break down.

Each innominate bone is made up of three fused bones: the ilium, the ischium, and the pubis.
The ilium is the uppermost and largest and consists of a wide, flattened plate with a long curved ridge (called the "iliac crest") along its border.
It extends forward from the ischium and around to the pubis symphysis, where it is joined to the other pubic bone by a tough, fibrous tissue.

X-ray studies revealed an old fracture of the left ischium and a bullet in the soft tissues of the left posterior thigh.
The veteran was found to be able to squat and to stand without difficulty and to exhibit four/five muscle strength in the left leg; decreased sensation along the lateral aspect of the left leg and foot; and a full range of motion of the left hip.
A longitudinal review of the clinical documentation reveals that the veteran's left lower extremity gunshot wound residuals are principally manifested by subjective left ischium pain after prolonged sitting; a well-healed surgical scar located at the left buttock crease; irregular shaped fracture residuals of the left ischium and no limitation of motion of the left leg.

The ischial tuberosity makes up most of the posterior surface of the ischium, is the site of attachment of many hip muscles and is the structure of primary support during sitting.
Fusion of the ischium and pubis at the acetabulum and the junction of these two bones along the ischiopubic ramus form a large foramen, the obturator foramen which faces anterolaterally.

The ilium, above (attached to the spine), and the pubis and ischium, below, formed a robust bony plate at the centre of which was a deep cup‹the hip socket, or acetabulum.
The hip socket faced laterally and was pierced or open at its centre for the articulation of the medially projecting proximal head of the thighbone.
The ischium was slightly less robust than the pubis, but it too joined its mate in a midline symphysis.

The pelvis is composed of several large, flat bones that form by their attachment to the sacrum, a rectangular, boxlike structure that gives shape to the caudal axial skeleton and serves as the point of attachment of the pelvic limbs to the axial skeleton.
In the adult animal, the acetabulum is formed by components of the ilium, ischium, and pubis.

The interval between this and the anterior end of the ilium answers to the cotyloid end of the pubis in a lizard, but it does not ossify.
Unless the like should prove to be the case in the Dicynodonts, it is in the Mammalia alone that the subsacral portion of the ilium elongates backwards, carrying with it the pubis and the ischium, between which a large rounded obturator fontanelle is developed.

Ischium (1) reduced to less than 2/3 length of the pubis; (2) lacking an ischial foot; and (3) possessing a prominent, triangular obturator process (placed more than 25% down the ischial shaft).
If the answer to the first question is yes and the answer to the second question is no, then the combination of any two (of the three) characteristics would be diagnostic for coelurosaurs (and only for coelurosaurs).
P.S. I haven't found any exceptions yet, but I have this unsettling feeling that there may be exceptions to such a uniquely diagnostic coelurosaur ischium (especially non-coelurosaurs which might possess two of the three).
